PPE 3003 Lecture 7 Cultural difference in self concept Criticisms 01 26 2015 o Meta analysis small effect size of differences Can take a look at all studies done on a topic and combines the results small effect a lot of overlap but group differences may be over simplification self enhancement tendency to describe and present oneself positively o Within our culture what group of people do not tend to self enhance People with depression o American maintain a more positive evaluation of self 4x as many positive self statements than Japanese people but Japanese people DO self enhance Traits related to interdependence group goals above their own Loyalty working well with a group selflessness modesty humility etc Asked them questions like how likely are you to defend your groups decisions etc Discovered that Japanese enhance just as much just enhance different traits Different culture enhance different qualities This can make cross cultural studies difficult to make accurate because they function differently If a trait is heavy across cultures that means it is due to evolution 01 26 2015 01 26 2015
