I recommend that Congress leave the portion of the NIH budget devoted to cardiovascular disease CVD and heart disease research unchanged Heart disease is still a serious health issue but current funding has already helped produce major improvements in prevention diagnosis and treatment Keeping the funding at its current level would allow researchers to continue their work without reducing support for other important areas of health research Over the years research funded by the NIH has helped lower death rates from heart disease through better medications improved medical procedures and greater awareness of risk factors These improvements show that the current level of funding is already effective Maintaining the same funding level would allow scientists to continue building on this progress while also ensuring that other diseases such as cancer neurological disorders and infectious diseases continue to receive the support they need In addition the NIH has a responsibility to study many different health conditions that affect people Increasing funding for one area may require reducing funding for another area that is also important Keeping the funding unchanged allows for a balanced approach that supports overall public health Finally heart disease prevention is not only dependent on research but also on individual lifestyle choices such as exercise healthy eating and avoiding smoking Education and prevention programs can continue alongside research efforts that are already funded For these reasons Congress should keep the NIH funding for cardiovascular disease research at its current level so progress can continue while maintaining support for other important health research areas
