Food acts as a mechanism you can control because you feel like you cant control anything else in your life. I. Anorexia Nervosa –- Refusal to eat or denial of hunger- Intense fear of gaining weight- Thinking about food a lot! Preoccupation of food – memorized calorie count of all major foods. - Thin appearance – no body fat. (Hollywood Stars)- Connection to BalletThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Clinical Signs of Anorexia: 1. Lethargy/cold intolerance – lack of nutrients and fat2. Cardiovascular problems – electrolytes are not active to keep heart going3. Osteoporosis – When teens/young adults stop menstruating due to low body weight. The lack of estrogen cannot hold bones together and this causes osteoporosis (Female Athlete Triad).4. **ON EXAM Lanugo- The soft hair on our skin that keeps the baby warm (the hair traps heat next to the skin) when people have advanced anorexia the body growsmore lanugo to try to keep body warm. 5. Xerosis- Lots of dry skin or abnormally dry skin. This is from lack of Vitamin A, Vitamin E and natural oils that are stored in fat. 6. Amenorrha II. Bulimia Nervosa –- Binge/Purge Cycle – Eating thousands of calories (to the point of hurting) in a short amount of time and then throwing up.- Binge caused by lack of control – failing an exam, stressful event.- Usually eat sugary foods for sugar and fat high, and then they regret how much they have eaten and force themselves to vomit.- Normal body weight or weight gain- Compensatory behaviors: vomiting, laxatives, excessive work outs Clinical Signs of Bulimia 1. Scars & Calluses – Bulimic people vomit 3-5 times a day – the body adapts to the common vomiting by making the person sticking the finger farther and farther down there throat- the scars and calluses (Russell’s sign) is from stomach acid burning hands/throat. 2. Dental Enamel Erosion – The stomach’s gastric acid is bad for your teeth – if you throw up – brush your teeth right away! 3. Peripheral Edema – Swelling of arms, legs, ankles and feet – One leg is much more swollen than other. 4. Bradycardia – slower heart rate due to the heart being smaller - not getting enough nutrients. (Heart as a muscle – heart begins to get eaten by the body because it is protein source) 5. Swollen Face/Cheeks/Salivary GlandsIII. Combined Practices:- Acts of both anorexic and bulimic – someone who doesn’t eat for 3 days then binges then vomits.IV. Other Issues- Binge eating (without purge) – causes weight gain.- Body dysmorphia disorder: One part of the body that they hate so much. “I hate my nose so much that I am not leaving the house today.” Seems irrational- Depression/ADHD/OCD/Substance abuse: Rituals with eating of food and ideas of foods.- Drunkorexia: When an anorexic goes drinking with their friends so they don’t eat for 2 or 3 days before the night that they drink. - Pregorexia: Someone with anorexia becomes pregnant – large belly/weight gain causes overwhelming feeling so they are still anorexic even though they are pregnant – dangerous for baby because the baby does not get enough nutrients – this child will have issues with development for there entire lives. V. Body Weight- Starvation changes the human brain and how you see yourself – it is a frustrating conversation because you are seeing 2 different people. - Using the BMI you can tell if someone has a healthy body weight – compares height and weight. - Show people pictures/Draw yourself/walk through the door – ways to tell how people perceive themselves. - Disconnect between the way they look and the way they see themselves. VI. Get Help- Wardenberg PHP – 6 eating disorder counslers- CAPS: 6 free psychological sessions per school year. 303-492-6766- FREE
