Optional: Although you are preparing a business guide and not a travel guide, providing in a small portion of the manual a general sense of the country might help. Check out a general video from the library (Corvallis-Public Library has a good selection), watch a film from the country, eat at a restaurant or make recipes from the country.Provide a brief summary of relevant background information about the country. Focus on the significant factors that affect businesses in general, the workplace and the workforce in particular. Consider demographics, social values, politics or government, geography, economics or other factors that are necessary for doing business in the country. Analyze WHY these factors are important for an expatriate. Why do they need to know about them?Include only information necessary for understanding and doing business in the country. Highlight relevant differences between the U.S and the country. Do not simply provide a travel guide!Use cultural dimensions discussed in the K&K text, e.g. Hofstede, or GLOBE, to differentiate cultures. It would be useful to address the major differences between your country and the U.S. on these dimensions.Executive SummaryAppendix: Supplementary material, cited in textBA 352 (sections 002 & 006)TEAM PROJECT(NOTE: As in the note to the class schedule, changes/additions to theseinstructions will be announced in class and posted accordingly. Youshould expect that the general thrust of these instructions will remain andchanges should be in the nature of minor corrections, clarifications, etc.)September 27, 2006PURPOSE Team projects are an integral portion of a BA 352 class. The rationale for these projects is to provide students the opportunity to learn to work within a group or team. This is a fact of corporate life, where a lot of work is done by people working together. For sections 002 and 006, we will have two team projects, a term project and two case reports. The term project requirement has two additional objectives: to provide students the opportunity to explore how values and expected behaviors differ across cultures and to identify specific management strategies and styles across different countries. The case reports are intended to provide students the opportunity to understand challenging management situations, apply appropriate OB concepts, and explore alternative approaches to dealing with the situation presented.GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTSEarly in the term, students will be organized into teams. Each team should then develop a work plan that describes how they will managethe requirements of the two projects over the term. The instructions for the term project will be provided in this document. The instructions for the case reports will be provided at the time the cases on which the reports are to be based are handed out. For planning purposes, each team should anticipate the following individual and team tasks for the case reports:  Read and analyze each of the case Discuss the case to make sure the team is able to understand the salient issues of each the cases Decide what the team will report on Divide the tasks relevant to writing the report Finish and submit the reportWORK PLAN . The deliverable under this General Instructions is a Work Plan which each team must submit by Oct 11, 2006.The Work Plan should be a document that explains exactly what is expected of each team member and of the entire team throughout theterm. The document should address the following: What is expected of the team? What are the course goals (related to each of the project?) What are the goals of individual members? The team? What are the team roles that have to be filled? Who are expected to occupy these roles? What are the individual member’s responsibilities? What are the specific tasks that need to be done and who is or are assigned to each of these tasks?  What resources will be needed to accomplish the project? Access to journals, magazines, and other sources of information? Contact information on members? Computers and printers? Meeting area? When are tasks expected to be accomplished? How is each member of the team going to be evaluated? What criteria will be applied? How much will each criteria weigh?A sample peer evaluation form is provided on the course website for your guidance. This form should be submitted along with your work plan. The Work Plan will essentially guide the operation of the team. The quality of the Work Plan will be evaluated on whether it effectively addresses the questions above, and whether it guides the team towards completion of the project.TERM PROJECTScenario: Your team is a part of a team of teams conducting a large study for a fast growing multinational company. Because of the rate by which it grew, the management of the company overlooked a few items. In particular they now realize that they have sent some of theiremployees to different countries without proper training in doing business in those countries. The task of your team of teams is to prepare An Global Resource Manual that would provide basic background and specific, practical and useful information to help someone work successfully in a foreign country.Country: The first task for your team is to select a country and obtain approval to proceed to prepare a Manual for doing business and working in that country. Since the company expects to be expanding rapidly, you may choose any country (other than the United States.) You may choose a country which is familiar to one of your team members, i.e. he or she grew up in that country, recently visited, studied there, etc. We will avoid duplication and in case of two teams wanting to do the same country, the team who asks for it first and/or who has a team member familiar with the country gets it. Content: Your Manual should contain a good discussion of at least three of the following topics, which three would depend on which might prove most problematic for a manager from the U.S. in your selected country or where information is available. You may propose alternate topics based on your chosen country and its particular situation.- the structure and use of work teams and groups - role of women in business/diversity- communication styles or business etiquette- preferred leadership styles- relationship between managers and subordinates- performance management, including reward systems- ethical nuances- conflict management
