BA 352 Organizational Behavior, GobeliPeer Evaluation ProcessBA 352 Organizational Behavior, GobeliIn many organizations, your performance and rewards are dependent upon the actions and performance of others. In this course your team paper and oral presentations, products of your team, will be assessed by the instructor. In addition, in organizations we are constantly being evaluated by our peers. Frequently groups also havethe power to give some rewards to individual members. This aspect of organizations will be replicated in this course through a process of peer evaluation. As outlined below, individual members of your team may receive different grades for your team paper. The purpose of this replication is to simulate reality and to highlight several aspects of group functioning. • peer evaluation and its impact on a group• group pressure (both positive and negative)• the impact of differential rewards on group performance and internal relationships• individual influence and responsibility and the potential to resolve problems resulting from the above• the value and impact of differing contributions to team performance• the possibility of individual learning through knowledge of your own and others’ perceptions, feelings and needs.I encourage you to think carefully about the criteria for peer evaluation, to openly discuss group process and to make careful evaluations so that each member has the benefit of others’ perceptions of his/her actions.OverviewGroups tend to operate more effectively when rewards are clearly contingent on performance. Often student groups are reluctant to do this, and simply hope that “everyone will do their share.” When someone doesn’t, that person often will get an equal share of the group’s grade, and everyone else is frustrated at the inequity. The method in this class provides a way to allocate the team project score to members according to their performance as rated by other group members. The advantages of this approach are that it:1) allows each group to discuss rating criteria and establish criteria weightings,2) makes possible feedback to individuals before the final score is allocated,3) allows all members to have a voice in the allocation, and4) is based on private ratings, reducing the possibility of coercion or pressure. This process involves the following steps. Your team will have time during class to complete these steps.1) Determine what is required of group members. Based on your experience in teams, knowledge of your team, its members, and the deliverables and the tasks involved in the group projects, determine what members must do for the group to achieve its objectives, to operate effectively.2) Review criteria and definitions for rating member performance (Team Evaluation Criteria). From the previous step, you should have a sense of some criteria on which members can be rated. Review your ideas against the suggestions provided by the instructor. Add any criterion which you believe is essential to effective team functioning. All team members must agree that the criterion is essential and will be included on the form. Delete any which you think are unnecessary for effective team functioning.Peer Evaluation ProcessBA 352 Organizational Behavior, GobeliReview the definitions below and revise any to meet the unique characteristics of your group. Write your final criteria and definitions on the Team Criteria Form.Work Quality: contributed work of superior quality.Work Quantity: contributed his/her fair share of the workCreativity: contributed ideas that were innovative, showed understanding of course material and integrated course concepts with research.Preparation: came to each class session and team meeting on time, prepared and ready to contribute constructively.Cooperation: was able to get along with group members; encouraged participation from other group members.Influence: the ability to create action; to communicate effectively and to persuade or lead the group.3) Develop weighting for each criterion. Once you have agreed to the final list of criteria, decide how much weight to assign to each. The usual method is to give each a percentage weighting, so that all percentages add up to 100% as shown in the example below. Remember, your group may assign different weightings.Work Quality 30%Work Quantity 25%Creativity 5%Preparation 25 %Cooperation 10%Influence 5%Total 100%Turn in one copy of the form, with all your names, criteria, definitions and weights to the instructor.4) From time to time, your team should talk about how you are doing, as a group, on the various criteria agreed upon. Individually, think about your contribution to the group, your strengths and areas you might want to work on. 5) Final Team and Peer Evaluation At the end of the term, (see Course Schedule for date) in class, team members will discuss as a group the team’s’ major strengths, areas where the team may have improved and how the team changed over the course of the term. In addition, each team member will talk one on one with each other member, exploring personal strengths and areas of improvement.Based on your overall team experience and the discussions and feedback, you will complete a final Peer Evaluation Form and a Team and Peer evaluation memo. You will note that team members mayreceive scores from 70% to 130%. The average of all team member ratings will be averaged and the instructor’s rating on the Resource guide modified based on the average rating received. The due date is listed on the Course Schedule. Detailed instructions for this individual assignment willbe distributed
