The Royal Portal, from Notre Dame de ChartresCurrent LectureI. Notre Dame de Chartres, or Chartres Cathedral, Gothic, begun 1145 – rebuilt after 1194 CEa. Know exterior (west façade), interior, plan, Royal Portal (west portal) b. It is a Bishop’s church (why it is called a cathedral) and a pilgrimage churchi. Notre Dame of Chartres, or “Our Lady of Chartres” ii. Associated with the Virgin Maryc. Before Christianity, there was a shrine here to a virgin motherd. It acquired an important relic… the robe of the Virgin Maryi. The robe survived when the church burnt down, and the church was rebuiltii. Everyone in the community pitched in in some way to help rebuild the churchiii. It is a monument to community spirite. Two portals, ascension and Virgin Mary, are set in human timej. The Last Judgment is set out of time (at the end of human time) i.
