Michelangelo’s father did not want him to become an artist (they were considered manual laborors)i. When Michelangelo was 14, he ran away from homeii. He was recommended for an art school that Lorenzo de’ Medici (“Lorenzothe Magnificent”) was buildingb. The Medici family was a wealthy, powerful familyc. Michelangelo moved in with Lorenzo’s family d. Florence became split between the followers of the Medici family and the followers of the Savonarola family, who were strict Christiansi. Lorenzo became sick and asked Savonarola to come to his bedside to forgive him; Savonarola damned him, and Lorenzo died soon afterii. Savonarola condemned any art that did not depict Christian subject matter, so his followers destroyed a lot of pagan art and jewelry 1. The fire was called the Bonfire of the Vanitiese. Savonarola took control of Florence, and Michelangelo fled i. The church eventually condemns Savonarola (he is tried for heresy and executed) ii. Florence became a republic iii. The Medici family is not welcomed back in to Florence, but artists like Michelangelo areII.
