Temptation and Expulsionc. Libyan SibylCurrent LectureI. The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo, Italian High Renaissance, 1508-1512a. Pope Julius II commissions ceiling frescoesi. His three important commission: 1. Rebuilding of Old St. Peter’s to New Saint Peter’s2. Update the Papal apartments, library3. Update the Sistine Chapela. Financed through the sale of papal indulgencesb. They are buon fresco/wet fresco c. The ceiling is approx. 5800 square feet and it is 70 feet from the floor of the chapeld. The papal conclave met here to elect new popes i. St. Peter is often thought of as the first popee. Sandro Botticelli’s Moses: Bearer of the Written Law- establishment of the old covenantf. Perugino’s Christ Giving the Keys of the Kingdom to Saint Peter- establishment of the new covenant g. Features octagonals, triumphal arches h. Reinforces the Popes authority in religious matters i. Ceiling was originally painted blue with stars, and there was nothing behind the alteri. Julius II originally wanted the twelve disciples painted on the ceilingThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Yearning for soul/Godc. Other people on the picture- Eve, Christ other people that God hasn’t createdi. Theory- form that the people are in is similar to the human brainii. Michelangelo performed dissections, but not many people at the time knew what a brain looked likeIII. The Temptation and Expulsiona. Create continuous narrative- see Adam and Eve twice b. Serpentine line- the line of beauty (gives grace and beauty to Eve in the Temptation)c. Emergence of the “S” curveIV. Libyan Sibyla. Frames the Creation of Light and Dark b. The Libyan Sibyl is from ancient Greek history, and she prophesized the coming ofa Messiah i. Neo-Platonism- new philosophy; people say that Plato was writing about the Christian Godc.
