Very durable stone… not easy to carveb. At the time, this was a life-size figurec. Ka figure- place for the spirit to go if the body is damagedi. Ka figure was generally found in the Valley Temple d. Wife was there so she would be by his side in the afterlifei. A bit atypical… it is more common to just see one figuree. Closed form- the arms and legs are still attached to the block of stonei. Free standing b/c you can walk around it… it is not attached to anythingii. Definition: Sculpture in the round- carved as intricately in the back as it isin the frontThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. In 20s or 30s, because ka statue was prepared for their death… they get to be eternally youngv. Naturalistic because we recognize them as human beings, but they have no flaws/blemishesII. Akhenaton, Nefertiti, and Three Daughtersa. According to Akhenaton, there is only one god… Aton, the Sun god. Akhenaton is the only pharaoh directly descended from Aton.i. He suddenly moved Egypt from a polytheistic culture to a monotheistic culture ii. Priests were furious… the were put out of work and the temples were shut down b. After Akhenaton died, the culture became polytheistic again and almost everything related to Akhenaton was destroyed (mummy, art, etc.)i. His son (by a diferent wife) returned Egypt to polytheisticc. Sunken relief sculpture- deeply carved into the stone, but the figures don’t standup and away from the basei. Rays from sun god coming downii. Ankhs- sign of life (sun is giving life to family) d. Akhenaton wanted art to be diferent, and chose diferent motifsi. Posture diferent… more relaxed, domesticii. Softer… not as much rigidity iii. Still have symmetry and composite
