Cuthbert became a saint after he died in 687 CEc. The Lindisfarne Gospels were created by the new Bishop of Lindisfarne monastery, Bishop Eadfirth, in the memory of Cuthburtc. Books were rare at this time; they were done completely by hand d. Gospel means “The Good Word” a. Materials: vellum (sheepskin), ink, gold leafb. Size: 1 ft ½ inches x 9 ¼ inches c. Evangelist: “One who brings the Good Word.” e. Four Evangelists: St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. Johna. The gospels of St. Matthew, St. Mark, and St. Luke relate the life of Christ, and are called the synoptic gospels—a synopsis of the life of Christ. b. The gospel of John is more theoretical and abstract, it does not relate the life of Christ, thus it is NOT one of the synoptic gospels. f. Gospel books were often arranged in a set patterna. A canon table has a list of old testament stories and how they related to the new testamentb. Profile view of Matthew; swirls on robe direct the eye to his bookd. St. Luke’s evangelist page: tetramorph is the winged ox. i. He began his gospel with the story of Zacharius, the father of Johnthe Baptist, who sacrificed an ox so that Elizabeth would have children. 1. allusion to the crucifixione. St. Mark’s Evangelist page: tetramorph is a winged lion i. allusion to the resurrection of Christ, since St. Mark focuses on it moref. St. John’s Evangelist page: tetramorph is an eagle associated with the ascension and the Wordi. John’s gospel opens with “In the beginning was the word, and the word was God…”g. In John’s, the words are highlighted (important)h. John ends with a description of the apocalypse (the end of human time, when Christ will return again)i.
