Early in the night is the deepest sleep, later is lighter REM sleep, less clear, 4-6 cycles assuming a full nights sleep of 8-10 hours. d. Newborns get 16 hours of sleep – half of which is REM. i. We consistently get less REM sleep as we age. IX. Why do we sleep?a. Evolution – safer to sleep in dark caves at night away from predators. b. Recuperation – bodies tend to fix selves when we are sleeping. c. Memory- brain consolidates days events and fixes them in the brain. d. Conservation of Energy – lot of work to stay awake. e. Growth – lot of the growth hormone is active at night. X. Sleep Deprivationa. Very dangerous. b. Americans are sleep deprived about 2-3 hours per night. c. We really need 8-9, most get 6-7. i. Very dangerous1. 20% of auto accidents are due to driving a. BAC of .05 – legally drunk if sleep deprived. 2. Obesity3. Hypertension and memory impairment4. Live longer with more sleep. XI. Sleep Disordersa. Insomnia – inability to stay or fall asleep for desired time. b. Sleep Apnea – Pauses in breathing when sleeping, up to 10 seconds. People are woken up by the lack of air, sounds a little different from snoring, Extremely dangerous – heart attacks and stroke linked to it. c. Narcolepsy – sleep process turns on at random times, higher in stressful situations. People with it often fall asleep when walking, hardlifestyle. XII. Dreaming a. Everyone dreams b.
