Parenting StylesHigh LowHigh Authoritative: helpful to their kids, supportive but Permissive: little guidance and discipline, and lots ofalso good at motivating them to succeed. Responsive but firm. love and support. They don’t really set goals for their kids though. Low Authoritarian: unsympathetic, strict, supportive, but everything has to be done the way they want otherwise it is wrong. Rejecting-Neglecting: no expectations, no care or support. They are never available to love or support the child. Don’t care, selfish. III. Piaget’s Theory - Children are qualitatively different from adults.i. All children’s thinking proceeds in the same stages in a similar order. 1. He became interested in this because he saw what the kidsgave as WRONG answers. He found that the five year olds would make the same mistake and the three year olds would make the same mistakes. b. Schemas: building blocks of knowledge, generalizations on the world based on experience. c. Assimilation: fit new objects and experiences into an old schema. i. We have an idea; we see something new and make it into our idea. 1. To someone a penguin is a bird but a kid might think it is a fish because of all the time it spends in the water. d. Accommodation: changing a schema or making a new one to fit an experience. 1. Changing idea that penguins are fish to the fact that they are birds. IV. Four stages of Development in Piaget’s theory a. We will find that Piaget was not completely right, however he was very much the foundation of everything that we do today. He couldn’t have been as accurate as we are today due to the lack of technology and tools that we have access to that he did not. 1. Sensorimotor: for infants, thinking is doing. No conceptualization cannot form schemas outside of their awareness. a. Object permanence – when parent leaves the roomthey expect you to come back.2. Preoperational: early years maybe 6-7a. Children can use symbols, big changes from sensorimotor.b. Kids can play, pretend, draw and talk.c. Conservation problems – cannot understand that substances are the same even when the shape changes. (2 different glasses of water, they cannot understand that there is the same amount of waterin the cup.)d. Reversibility – “Don’t stand up” versus “Sit Down.”e. Egocentrism – spotlight on their own lives, seems important to you but it really might not be important to others because they are so wrapped up in
