FDI only really BEGAN in the 18th century.Chinese immigrants building US railroads financed by British capital (19th century)The total stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) increased 191 times between 1914 and 1995.3) Modern States worked harmoniously with modern capitalists.Bank Of England4) Market structures produced center periphery process-formations of uneven development on a global scale.Socio Cultural ProcessThe European international society of states eventually diffused world wide.Colonial Empires 1914“International Society”Formally defined:“A SOCIETY OF STATES or (international society) exists when a group states, conscious of a certain common interests and common values, form a society in the sense that they conceive themselves to be bound by a common set of rules in their relations with one another, and share in the working of common institutions, “such as diplomacy, international law, regimes, managed BOP, and so on---- Hedley Bull, The Anarchical Society (1977)Socio Cultural Process: Individual LevelIncreasing interaction capacity facilitated a huge upsurge in cross-cultural contact among individuals worldwide. The Internet3 Points To Make Concerning Environment process1) Modern medicine combats microbes, but microbes combat modern medicine right back.2) Transportation of flora and fauna has produced difficult-to-calculate consequences.3) Pollution and resource depletion underscore that human activity reshapes planetary structures.Structure2 Macro Changes in structurethe system (that is, structures) became stronger in relation to units.unit absolute strength also increasedMilitary Political StructureThe Neorealist predictions were fulfilled:One type of unit did become universally dominant, and the system retained a stable anarchic structure.Economic StructureThe huge surge in interaction capacity, overall shift from linear to multi-ordinate system structure, and massive increase in trade and financial activity empowered a global market.5 facts of the historically new global market structure1) It creates pressures toward a single universal price for like goods.2) It overrides local economies by challenging them with cheap imports and demanding from the particular types of products.3) It overpowers older economic systems, such as barter, luxury trade, and command economies (as in the former Soviet Union and China)4) It imposes the patterns of economic cycles on the whole system, with effects sometimes benign and sometimes malign.5) It creates a system management problem (or large set of them) that grows in size as the market becomes more extensive and more elaborate.Questions:Why did world society not develop at the same pace and in the same way as international society? What are the implications? Will a new “Westernistic” civilization fit in the bill? What will be the effects of the environmental challenges such as global warming on socio-cultural, economic, and military-political processes? How can it be that global market structures affect contemporary states just as they do business firms? How do the structures in each key sector inter- relate? IS THERE META-STRUCTURE? If so, how does it manifest itself?IR Lecture 7The Global International System:-Process and Structure + Key Ideas That Have Shaped The PresentTalks: USC Chinese InstituteFeb 5th 4:00pm - 5:30pm Leavey LibraryFeb 12th 4:00pm - 5:30pm University Club, Pub RoomFeb 19th 12pm – 1:30pm University Club Banquet RoomMarch 12th 4:00pm - 5:30pm University Club, Banquet RoomMilitary Political Process-There were 3 important changes during the past 500 years.. o1) Process formation expanded from regional to global scale.The Napoleonic Wars (1803 – 1815)Congress Of Vienna1815: Managing the global balance of powerAnglo Japanese Alliance 1902The Russo Japanese WarWhen military process became global, so did diplomacyWashington Naval Conference and treaty (1921 – 1922)o2) Technological advance became increasingly important in weapons design and production. GunpowderShipsArms Sales to The Third World o3) Widespread and deep revulsion developed against war itself. Image: “Mealtime in the trenches” World War 1Nagasaki (9 August 1945)The US: A Warrior Culture?-4 Economic Process important pointso1) World trade expanded exponentially, becoming truly global.From 1750 to 1994 , the aggregate value of world increases 1,505 (B & L, P. 308).o2) Globe spanning finance and investment operations expanded alongside trade.
