ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 19 Outline of Last Lecture - Donic Order- Ionic Order- Temple of Artemis - Early-High Classical- Temple of ZeusOutline of Current Lecture - West Pediment of Temple of Zeus- Metope of Temple of Zeus- Acropolis- Parthenon- Pediments of ParthenonCurrent Lecture- The West pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia the central figure is Apollo- Apollo is engaged in the scene as he is holding a head- This scene is of the Greeks versus the centaurs - The figures seem more active than the other side - The movement still seems posed and there is a restraint to the movement- The story of the scene is that there was a royal wedding and everyone was invited - The centaurs were creatures known to be educated and capable of interacting with people- The problem was that when they get drunk they become savage and crazy so they had too much wine and they tried to kidnap the women - The Greeks to action and they started fighting with them in the end all the centaurs were killed and that is why there are no more centaurs - The metope sculptures of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia were of the Labors of Herakles - He was a very known athlete- He had to do these labors as punishment for killing his family which he did drunk- One of his difficult tasks is that he is asked to get some apples so asks Atlas for help the god who holds up the sky so as Atlas helps him he is holding up the sky- There is a problem when Atlas comes back he cannot figure a way to get the apples fromAtlas without dropping the sky so wise Athena comes to help Herakles- The Acropolis in Athens Greece was left aside as national park in Greece- Acropolis means high city - The entire city is pretty much a sanctuary to AthenaThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
