ARTH 1380 1st EditionExam # 2 Study Guide Lectures: 15-25Lecture 15 (October 10)What is Mantiklos Apollo?- Mantiklos Apollo is a small sculpture the face is way too big but there is a trend towards naturalistic art. There is an inscription on the leg that allows the sculpture to speak here saying that it is a statue for Apollo in hopes that Apollo will grant something in return. We do not know who this statue represents a god or a person. This makes art of this time unique that you could not tell a god from a regular person. It is from the Orientalizing period.What is the funerary vase?- Funerary vase is a large vase that is more than three feet high this was amazing in itself since it is so large. This object is originally used for wine but it is a grave marker and on ithad images of the bronze age to represent that this person had the ideal character. It was a krater vase which has a large opening at the top. It is from the geometric period.When was the Geometric Period?- The Geometric period was from 900-700 BCE.When was the Orientalizing period?- The Orientalizing period was from 750-600 BCE.Lecture 16()When was the Archaic period?- The Archaic period was from 600-480 BCE.What is the Standing youth and what does it resemble?- Is a statue that resembles Egyptian art. Egyptian statues are different in that it had a stone attached to the back while the Greek statues are nude free standing. This statue has a necklace on which was rare for these type of statues. The ideal image is shown with the physical strength showed of the body. It was 6 feet this one was about life-size there are other statues that are bigger. There is line down the middle so there is still asketch to the sculpture and it is almost as they are drawing the features. This is from the Archaic period.What is the Peplos Kore and what is its significance?- Peplos Kore is a statue that is an example of how female sculptures were getting bigger and they are clothed. It has rounder softer features and the face looks more three-dimensional. The smile is known as the archaic smile from the period it was a way to animate the figure to make it more life-like. The smile contributes to a three-dimensionallook because it gives it like cheeks and dimples to make it more realistic. Paint did preserve in certain areas like on the hair. The garments that are used and that at the top are double and tied at the waist. This is from the Archaic period.Lecture 17When was the early high classical period?- The early-high classical period was from 480-400 BCE also known as the severe period.What is the Doryphoros and its importance?- Doryphoros or spear bearer is a sculpture created by the artist Polykleitos, he was well known and even wrote a book about art and the ideal figure. The Greeks were interested in mathematics and the ideal proportions and this image is suppose to be the epitome of ideal image. The figure is robust, with a slight twist and had the proportions that were highly regarded. From the early-high classical period.When was the late classical period?- The late classical period was from 400-323 BCE.What is Hermes and the infant and what makes it different?- The sculpture Hermes and the infant Dionysos is created by Praxiteles they are gods that are half-brothers. It is generally believed that it is a Roman copy but has not been agreedupon. The proportions are different the design is longer and slender, with a smaller headand there is not an exact emphasis on the bulky muscles. This design is more slender and elegant the hair has also changed it has more texture, but the stance has not really changed. He does seem to leaning and there almost seems to be more of a twist. The biggest difference is that there is a baby in the sculpture earlier sculptures were just individuals. There seems to be a gaze between the subject and the other subject. Not only that the viewer is not excluded from the gaze, but brought into too the gaze as well.This is from the late classical period.Lecture 18What is on top of the West Pediment of the Temple of Artemis?- The top has the gorgon Medusa it is frontal view meant to show her running. Medusa’s head it is thought to ward off evil and used as a weapon. The triangle shape poses a problem so that is why it is taller where Medusa is at but the figures shrink as the space gets narrower. This is from the Archaic period.Lecture 19What is the Parthenon? - The Parthenon is at the Acropolis in Athens it was partially blown out from the war. Recently it was used as a Christian temple for years. The Parthenon has more decoration than the building of Zeus. There are battle themes that are represented through the building and there is a victory. The pediments were decorated as well and there are exact replicas that exist in Nashville. The west pediment was decorated with sculptures that were three-dimensional and were not attached. This is from the early-high classical period.What are the three goddesses?- It is a group of three goddess sculptures. There are deep folds with drapery style on the dresses. It shows a strong contrast. The outfit yields to show the bodies’ curves and emphasizes them. From the early-high classical period.Lecture 20What is the Achilles and Ajax vase created by Andokides?- This vase created by Andokides was double sided. One side it was the regular Achilles and Ajax playing dice but on the other side there is on play on the colors the backgroundis black and the figures are orange. This was very different the figures could now have more of an expression and details because the figures are orange versus black so it does not have to be scratched for details but instead now painted. This allowed for innovationof the play in colors. From the Archaic period.What is the vase of the Death of Sarpedon?- The Death of Sarpedon was painted by Euphronios and this was his most important piece. Sarpedon was a warrior from the Trojan side as well as a demi- god son of Zeus and he was defeated at battle Zeus could not interfere so he watched as he died butthen sent to retrieve the body. It is very complete and fragile and the painting is masterful. There is a big frieze in the center. The shape even accentuates the scene. The scene is framed by two vertical figures. The attention is brought to the diagonal figure. There is a strong emphasis on the muscles. Death and Sleep are picking up the body and are accompanied by Hermes the messenger whom is going to take the soul to the
