ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 28 Outline of Last Lecture - Plebian and Classicizing- Equestrian Statue- Apotheosis of Antonius Pius- Plebeian art- ConstantineOutline of Current Lecture - Dura-Europos- Synagogues - Christian churches - Catacombs- Sarcophagus Current Lecture- Dura-Europos was a non- pagan city fell to a Roman attack in 256 - In a last effort to defend the city the built a wall around it which actually preserved the worship houses because they were built close to the wall- The places of worship the synagogues and churches were just houses that were converted into places of worship - These places had similar architecture - The people of these religions for the general part were not wealthy so they could not invest in a new building - Image making was not allowed it was considered making cult images and just seen as pagan not this was not part of the Jewish faith because they believed that you would - There are no images of a personified God- The wall with Torah niche wall painting at first glance the figures do not look classicizing - The figures are showed frontally - There are images of stories from the Old Testament - The finding of the baby Moses wall painting shows how there are multiple narratives in one image it show the baby in the water then out and overall movement of different scenes- In the image Crossing of the Red Sea it shows the hands of God parting the water- It shows two images of Moses and the story is basically told in one image- In the Christian community houses that are found there is a place where the sermon takes place and place for the public, but there is a room right next to the sermon room These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
