ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 5 Outline of Last Lecture - Transition/ Mesolithic Period- Fertile Crescent- Neolithic Period- Fork hill Outline of Current Lecture - Catal Huyuk housing- Interior decoration- Catal Huyuk artCurrent Lecture- The houses at Catal Huyuk were very close together- There were no streets and they would share walls- This could be seen as protection because it is harder to penetrate the buildings- The fact that they share walls is good because it helps keep the homes cool in warm weather and warm in colder weather.- The people worked together as a community- There is consistency in the plans of the houses- This was new social and larger community- Cohesiveness tells us it functions as a unit- The walls of the houses were made of brick and had plaster to cover the brick of the walls- These new housing created a divide between nature and society- The housing was unusual compared to other Neolithic homes- Scientists are able to take microscopic material from the floor and identify where house activities like eating and sitting were done- The dead would be bury right under the floor of the platforms literally like six under ground- The interior design consisted of wall paintings and skulls of animals were hung on the wall- The dead would at times be excavated and decapitated and the skull would be laid on the platforms- This would create the atmosphere of the living and the dead together- There were also leopard painted wall reliefs These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- The wall paintings here were more symbolic than in other Neolithic paintings they cannot be interpreted literally - The are paintings that consist of vultures so there might be a connection with death- A well known wall painting town painting with volcano is viewed as one of the first maps- In a way it look like an aerial x-ray view of the houses- However what throws off this theory is a painting that looks like a volcano over the homes spilling out lava- Another idea is that it might instead be a leopard skin, but just is not drawn to scale- There is still a lot to be interpreted about the paintings- There are also found female sculptures - These sculptures have more context so it allows for more interpretation- The goddess figurine with leopards is similar to past figurines, but in this one there are feline creatures - There are different interpretations one is that women were powerful as here she is seen controlling nature- Another idea is in charge of producing food- She also seems powerful because she is sitting on a throneKey TermsSymbolism- art that is symbolic and does not have literal
