ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 18 Outline of Last Lecture - Doryphoros- Before Late Classical - Late Classical - Greek architectureOutline of Current Lecture - Donic Order- Ionic Order- Temple of Artemis - Early-High Classical- Temple of ZeusCurrent Lecture- There was two regional systems to organize the temples- The western places had the doric order- The bottom has a stepped platform then above that a stylobate which is where everything is sitting on - On top of that are the columns which sit directly on the stylobate they are thick at the bottom and become narrow - On top of this is the capital which in this case is like a cushion and has a flared shape- Above that there is the epistyle above this is there is a frieze it is long and horizontal alternates from triglyph and metope - The top is the pediment and it has a triangular shape - The ionic order is from the other region - The difference is that the columns have a base and are not directly on the stylobate- The columns were the same narrow shape - The capital from these temples were ornate and fancier - The frieze is unbroken the same throughout - The frieze or pediment were decorated with Greek sculpture - A viewer can identify from where the art is from based on the shape if it is square shape it is from the metope long and narrow the frieze and triangular is the pediment - The sculpture is made of high relief or free standing- The Temple of Artemis at Corfu was from early in the Archaic period- It had the standard temple plan- The pediment was decorated they were relief blocks it is made out of limestone- The top has the gorgon Medusa it is frontal meant to show her running These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
