ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 29 Outline of Last Lecture - Dura-Europos- Synagogues - Christian churches - Catacombs- Sarcophagus Outline of Current Lecture - Types of churches- St. Peter’s church- Church of Santa Constanza- Santa Marian Maggiore- Galla PlacidaCurrent Lecture- The two known types of church were basilica and central plan - They both had an apse in the back of the church which is a semi-circle- The apse comes from Augustus forum design - Old St. Peter’s church it followed the basilica plan - The old church is not still standing we just have the reconstructed church and ideas of how the old one looked like- It had a cross shape that was ahead of its time seen in later years- It had a Hellenistic style - It was situated outside of Rome- It was in honor of St. Peter that was put death in this area and buried - There is a wider higher aisle the windows that were to let in more light - The middle part is the nave- The church shows the triumph of Christ- Stain glass was a later addition to the church - The side aisle was to look into the nave- There were classical looking arches and Corinthian columns taken from other buildings - The church of Santa Constanza it was from the fourth century a central plan church - It was made and dedicated to Constantine’s daughter Constanza - It was built to mark the tomb of Constanza it was originally a mausoleum and later became a church - It did not have a nave it was like a tower and this would have been for her sarcophagus itlooks classical - It has an ambulatory which is the aisle that goes around itThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
