ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 37 Outline of Last Lecture - New Structure parts- Capitals- Tympanum- Trumeau Outline of Current Lecture - Tragedies- Ambulatory of St. Dennis- Royal Portal- Notre Dame- Rose window- Ekkehard and UtaCurrent Lecture- Gothic architecture aimed to gain vertical height and lighting in the building - Gothic period there is the introduction of stained glass- Virgin becomes a popular figure and represents redemption and mercy- One in four people were killed by the plague in this period of time and had devastating effects- Also the Hundred Years War began- This was the time where there was the Great Schism which was when there were two popes in church and confused Catholics to whom was correct and needed to be followed- The Normandy invasion was launched as well- The Gothic period was from 1140-1400 CE.- The ambulatory aisle of St. Dennis surrounds the center- It is pierced with windows- It has open lowing space- It is from the Gothic period so stained glass became popular- It has a good height and at the top the vaults.- The royal portal has the arches we have seen before the tympanum - The royal portal is used only for important events with the Bishop- In the middle Christ appears as the majesty has evangelist surrounding him but appears serene and human- On the left side represents the ascension of Jesus and he appears floating- On the right the incarnation of Christ is represents- The portal is decorated with sculpture relief. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
