ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 36 Outline of Last Lecture - Quote- Romanesque beginnings- Relics- Santiago de CompostelaOutline of Current Lecture - New Structure parts- Capitals- Tympanum- Trumeau Current Lecture- The gothic style originated from Normandy as it is exported by William the explorer- Groin vault was introduced in this period changed the images of the ceilings - Later on the ribbed vault was introduced and it parted the ceiling into seven sections- Flying buttress - The entrance to Saint Pierre was the beginning of the revival of relief sculptures. - There would be mosaics to decorate and the capitals became more heavily ornate as they were elaborately carved.- Each capital on the columns is different from the other one. - It has figural sculptural that is historiated so it tells a story. - They would have images of people, animals or fantastical animals.- This capital Moses at Sainte Madeleine is about Moses and the Ten Commandments. - His people had started to worship the cow as an idol and his reflect how this was not good because it is bad to have false idols and is one of the commandments. - This capital is an example of how they are historiated and it tells a narrative.- The ascension of Christ is an image on the tympanum of Sainte Madeleine at Vezelay. - It is a half round area and shows a lot of relief decoration. - It shows images from the fourth chapter of revelations. - This is suppose to reflect salvation Christ is in the middle and around him are the symbols of the evangelist. - There is a figure next to him holding a scroll that has the names of people that will be saved. - The small figures around show the 24 elders they represent the rippling glass. Each on is different and dynamic.- The figures are lively and this shows the presence of the Holy Spirit.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
