ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 33 Outline of Last Lecture - Roots of Islam- Mohammad- Mosques- Dome of Rock- Court of lionsOutline of Current Lecture - Intro to medieval art- Queen Arnegunde jewelry collection- Hiberno-Saxon Art- Sutton Hoo burialCurrent Lecture- The Muhammad Ibn al-Zain is made of a mix of metal - It has different friezes with a narrative frieze in the middle the central image shows men or soldiers it shows lively people- There is vegetal motif in the background - Qur’an page shows how calligraphy is noblest form of art because of connect to the Qur’an - Calligraphers are important people and have an important status- Medieval art is from the period 476-1050 CE- There were different groups of people and were in constant conflict with each other - The different groups were Greco-Roman, Christian, Non-Roman (Huns, Vandals, Goths, Franks, Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Merovingian- Characteristic objects from this time were small precious objects versus large architecture- People were on the constant move and in war so there were no powerful king to commission art so wealthy people would keep wealth on their person such as jewelry, belts, and daggers- These objects were also buried with them - Illuminated manuscripts were also art from this time- There were still kings and queens but they were not as powerful and had small kingdoms- The jewelry collection of Queen Arnegunde is from the sixth century and it was found in her tomb - The location is the royal church St. Dennis- She had a belt on her waist with an extravagant large buckle- There is a lot of detail on the belt if you look closely there are animal figures the head These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
