ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 23 Outline of Last Lecture - Myth of Rome- Etruscan background- Tombs- Paintings- Temple- PortraitsOutline of Current Lecture - Roots of Rome- Changes in Republic- Housing- Concrete constructionCurrent Lecture- Romulus is the first of several kings- There is a regal period for the Romans at one point the Etruscans take over and reign theRomans revolt and establish a republic - It remained this way for almost 500 years- Rome was essentially an empire and in control of vast territory- The Roman republic was complex power lay in two official counsels that were voted on by the senate of elders- The counsels rules military like commander and chief there is a representational authority- Romans had a real sense of who they were and what defined them they defined themselves as simple farmers they worked hard to serve the state- When they come into contact with Hellenistic art it does not fit with Roman way of life they do turn around they become collectors of Greek art and change - During the period of Roman republic there become to be problems as they begin to conquer because it does not really fit with the new land - First century BCE becomes a time of crisis- Year 81 BCE Silla names himself a dictator to fix everything and then steps down and everything goes back to the republic state- Pompey does the same thing but goes back and forth there is a time of civil war- Caesar defeats him and names himself dictator for life at first people do nothing about it because he is well known wealthy has military strength and is lovedThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
