ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 15 Outline of Last Lecture - Collapse Minoans- Intro to Macedonians- Palace of TyrenesOutline of Current Lecture - Dark ages- Geometric period- Homer- Orientalizing periodCurrent Lecture- Widespread destruction causes of collapse unknown many factors contribute to this like climate change that affected agriculture - People moved and they were affected by “sea people” that were invaders - Kingdoms were closely connected with international trade so when things got bad they got bad fast- Some places got through better than others- Palaces were destroyed and writing was lost the city of Troy also collapsed- A collapse society does not mean that people disappeared people stayed and had no palace in a scrappy houses writing was lost for years and technologies skills lost - The period known as the dark ages was from 1100-900 BCE it was called this because wehave no evidence from this time period there is no writing no monumental art- People of this period were aware that the period before them was great and they had monuments to remind them there is evidence that they would take offerings to the royaltombs - The geometric and Orientalizing period was from 900-600 BCE- For the Greeks their immortal gods were humanized and had flaws which was not seen before- Their art work also had regular people that could be seen as heroes or people with ambitions and talents not just important people were immortalized through art - The Geometric period was from 900-700 BCE - It was named after the style of art that was known from this time that had geometric figures design- People start to venture out at this time and trade- Cypress did not experience dark age so the Greeks relearned from them art and writing- The alphabetic writing was introduced These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- When writing was reintroduced is when Homer’s stories were written- These were the most important literary work in Greece- They were standard for the people and you learn from this honor, relationships, gods- These were believed to originally been oral works and were circulated through the dark ages Odysseus and Achilles were Mycenaean and these were stories of the Bronze age - The fact that these stories were written at a different time period the time period that they were written in was incorporated in the stories - On the tombs of people that died that were accomplished individuals they would be honored by having a large vase with art on it- Funerary vase (Krater)- is a large vase that is more than three feet high this was amazing in itself this object is originally used for wine but it is a grave marker and on it had images of the bronze age to represent that this person had the ideal character- Hero and centaur- is an example of the fairly simple figurines of the time period and it was an example of how horses were usually shown- This was left at a sanctuary as a gift and it is made of bronze so it has monetary value - Centaur is a mythical creature and this figure creates a narrative and is an example of how the Greeks used art to visualize this narrative- It was awkward in that the man has the penis showing and so does the horse - Orientalizing period was from 750-600 BCE- There was more external contact and colonializing took place- Art was inspired from other places they came into contact with like for example Egypt- They were influenced by East places - They were trying to make the art look more natural - Mantiklos Apollo the face is way too big but there is a trend towards naturalistic art - There is an inscription on the leg that allows the sculpture to speak here saying that it is a statue for Apollo in hopes that Apollo will grant something in return- We do not know who this statue represents a god or a person- This makes it so unique the art of this time that you could not tell a god from a regular personKey TermsKrater- a wine vase that is a funerary tomb
