ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 8 Outline of Last Lecture - City of Uruk- White temple- Priest king- Warka headOutline of Current Lecture - Victory stele- Stele of vultures- Votive figures- Royal cemetery of UrCurrent Lecture- The fragment of victory stele of Eannatum is a low relief it has freezes that allows for a narrative- In this stele the victory is given to the king- The narrative is a battle between two cities and one succeeds - This was a type of media advertising on stone showing that the city was the best and had won thanks to their king and god - They were done on stone so that it was permanent and always remembered- The artwork has the strategy of stacking to show three-dimensionality at the bottom there is men marching into battle in the top part there are hands to represent soldiers and they are walking over dead bodies it method to show who won- There are more literal ways to show the enemy has lost for example they have the enemy sculpted dead bodies eaten by vultures- In other part of the artwork there is a male figure that can be identified as a god and thereason is his beard is longer and he wasn’t using the same material in the clothing- By doing this in the artwork it gives credit to their god for a successful victory and making them responsible for the win- The gods were usually depicted as the victors since the believed that they one the battle because their god would defeat the opposing city’s god - There were votive figures that were discovered that were believed left in representation of a prayer inside the temple- They all looked similar in that they had a cartoon feel to them and they seemed to be praying as well as having popping big eyes- Although they look similar there was still a uniqueness to each figure- The royal cemetery of Ur dates back to 2650 BCEThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
