ARTH 1380 1ST Edition Lecture 7 Outline of Last Lecture - Location of first cities- Distinctions between the new cities and past towns- Invention of writing Outline of Current Lecture - City of Uruk- White temple- Priest king- Warka headCurrent Lecture- Uruk was an independent important city-state- Located near where the Euphrates river used to be modern day Iraq now barren dessert land- Population was a scalar difference from other past and present places about 20000-50000 people- In order to support the people there must have been tributes from locations nearby- The White Temple and Anu ziggurat Sky God was a temple constructed of mud it was nota natural feature it was built up from the mud brick- The reason why this center survived was because once it was finished it was covered with white plaster that is made from limestone- It was an unusual thing to do but the white plaster gave it a shiny appearance - They put so much effort because they wanted to impress their god and the people around by showing that their god was more powerful- Each city or settlement had their particular divinity- Cylinder seals show priest-king it basically three roles- The first is as a priest closed to the gods in one image it is feeding the sacred herd the temple animals and caring for them- In another depiction he is hunting with bow and arrow showing he is in control specifically the wild- The third role is a military role and he is depicted as the military ruler having prisoners presented to him- In the art it is mostly frontal view of the body shows a muscular torso and a profile view of head - He also wears a body skirt and a head band or cap he also mostly wears his hair in a bunThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
