10.16.13 kin 272 class notes- Lymphatic systemo Functions 1. Production, maintenance, distribution of lymphocytes- Lymphocytes- governing bodies of this system- Lymphatic organs and tissues house lymphocytes 2. Maintenance/uptake of lymphatic tissues- lymphatic organs- tissue vs. organ 3. Maintain the lymphatic tube system (vessels)- identical to circulatory system…o share white blood cellso tube-like structures are very similar lymphatic vessels, arteries, veins- lymphatic vessels:o hose example: water moving quickly at shorter distances flow components- increasing length alters resistance- flow decreaseso fluid is quick at beginning of capillary, slows at the endo filtration lots of water and nutrients removed at beginning of the capillary oncotic/osmotic pressure are higher in tissues outside capillary at beginning of capillaryo absorption at end of tube water travels back in oncotic/osmotic pressure moves to inside of tubeo **always filter out more than you will absorbo this means that in surrounding tissues (extracellular fluid or interstitial fluid – same thing) fluid between cells not made it into muscle tissue yet…o lots of water if its not absorbed – would make you very bloatedo terminal lymphaticso lymphatic capillary considered to be a terminal lymphatic vessel has an end to it (unlike veins/arteries that branch off) rounded on the end can always be found in immediate surrounding of capillaries epithelial lining- is not consistent with one line- has overlapping layers of epithelial tissue- basement membrane- major difference: are not in one consistent layer- exists for a number of purposes:o overlapping sectionso flaps of these are anchored by collagen fiberso 1. these are used to keep out bacteriao bacteria can travel with other substances through little spaceso 2. bacteria can also be trapped inside (prevents them from going to the tissues) inside lymphatic capillaryo flaps create one way valves**********o VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE Lymphatic capillary- Strategically placed near capillary/veinule- Increases water concentration of interstitial spaceo Packed with water- Don’t want to get swollen – lymphatic capillary absorbs watero Hydrostatic pressure or oncotic pressure to pull water ino Draw water into spaces in between overlapso Water filtered into interstitial space contains many things Nutrients Oxygen Sodium Potassium Foreign invaders…o High conc. Of water in interstitial spaceo Osmotic movement of water into lymphatic capillaryo When it travels in there it is going to bring with it… waste products, foreign invaders, junkkkkkk, nasty stuff- Once you move H2O + waste + bacteria have moved into lymphatic capillary it is known as lymph (interstitial fluid, water, wastes- Lymphatic capillary contains lympho One way valves keeps it in thereo Does not have the ability to leave- Lymph is cleaned. Moved back into circulatory
