What was the right of the states? What did they have the right to do?to allow slavery to expand out into the new territories that were being brought in as states. If slaves are not longer allowed in these territories it means that no more slave states will be created. As more and more free states come into the union, the slave states will become so dominated in Washington, that eventually the non-slaveholding areas would have enough power to dictate what the south could and could not do. The southerners took up arms to come to a solution to this problem. The Nullification Crisis Southerners argued that the tariffs after the era of good feelings was over, the south said that the progression of industry took a toll on southerners. South Carolina decided that if they did not like a law that was passed that they would just nullify it. Jackson sent federal troops to march into South Carolina. Very few people wanted war at this point. Henry Clay, the great compromiser worked to come up with compromising tariff that allowed both sides to back down and proclaim victory. But South Carolina politicians made a statement going into the election of 1860 that if a republican is elected that they will pull out of the union.
