Lecture 4 History LUTHER claims to have an epiphany that all he needs to do is have absolute faith in god All of the guilt went away after this epiphany When he goes up against Charles 5th he asks for time to research Now he is public enemy 1 Wyclif was never burned but after his death they dug him up because after his death he was found as a Luther can not recant what he has written because it is true to him Luther was burned at the stake heretic Luther was found as a Saxon and he was a thorn in the side of the holy Rome Luther never wanted anything to be named after him but since he was such a leader they named his stuff Lutheranism JOHN CALVIN 1509 1564 o He believed Luther o Basic Calvinist beliefs Only two books necessary The bible and Clavin s Institutes of the Christian religion 1559 John Calvin was never the ruler of Geneva For a time he was thrown out of Geneva for getting into an argument with the counsel The beliefs that calvin taught were important Mnemonic o T total depravity of human nature There is nothing good in human nature The only way humans can make contact with god is if he comes down to you o U unconditional election of the individual o L Limited atonement Christ died for the elect and only the elect It is gods choice and his choice alone English Puritans o I irresistible grace god is able to effect what he wills o P perseverance of the saints those whom god elects will not defect from their calling Only if you are a chosen member of the elect you will go to heaven Mary 1st 1553 1558 Geneva Switzerland Marian exiles came back at the beginning of Elizabeth 1st Elizabeth wanted to change things more drastically than her father They wanted to change all aspects of the church Purify the Anglican church Protestant pushed not to far into Calvinism Difference between the Puritans and Anglican o Anglican church during the reign of Elizabeth o Puritans wanted to do away with o Low church Anglicans and puritans were very similar o They hated the fact so they didn t believe it New England Puritan Theology William Perkins was a Puritan 1558 1602 A meticulously sound and orthodox Calvinist He had a fear of not being among the ELECT Basic Ideas o Faith you had to find faith god put it there not yourself o The Human Element humans can mold that faith and grow o Grace tiny seed that is planted into the soul Cultivated by you but god makes it grow Covenant of Grace o Man can fail God never will o Man can do something to break this Covenant of Grace but God will never
