Wars of the RosesCurrent LectureEnglish and British Monarchs 1485-1776Tudors-Henry VII (1485-1509) He has a Welsh name. His claim to the throne is through his mother. How did he obtain the throne? Lancastrians and Yorkists2 groups: Landcastrians and Yorkists. Henry is a descendant of the Landcastrians. Landcastrian has throne with Henry VI. After him Edward IV who came from the Yorkists then took over. ThenHenry the IV. He died. Then Henry VII came to the throne at a very young age. His Uncle helped him through his position on the throne. History of Henry Tudor (Henry VII)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Richardhad bad scoliosis with one shoulder higher than the other. His skeleton was found last year and they were able to identify him through a DNA test. Henry was proclaimed king. Henry was an unusual ruler. He was an able soldier, but one he came to the throne he did not want to spend his money on the military. He is more interested in government administration and he was very good at it. He wanted to put away a great deal of money in his treasury rather than spend it and was able to save it for his sun. Henry was very concerned about having heirs to the throne. He wanted a son and grandson to continue the throne. Henry's VII - Henry VIIIHenry decided he would marry off his son to the daughter of the most powerful other rulers, Spain. His sons name was Arthur and was born with a genetic defect. Arthur and Katherine weremarried at age 15, but Arthur died shortly thereafter. Now Katherine is a young widow and Henry wants her married. He considers marrying her himself because his own wife has died. Instead, he decides to contract with Spain to marry her to his second son. His second son's name is Henry and marries his 11-year-old to the 17 year old Katherine. A marriage treaty is signed. In 1509 Henry VII dies and Henry the VIII who is now 17, comes to the throne. Henry theVIII was a very athletic man. He loved to feast and party and did not enjoy the boring parts of the government. Henry gave Lord Bolesey who he named Chancellor all of his work. As Henry began to get older, his activity level went down and gained a lot of weight. Henry VIII1509-1547All of the children he had had with Katherine died. His only surviving child was a female and so he does not want to leave the crown without having a male child. Henry was a renaissance man and was both intellectually and artistically gifted. He composed. He tried to figure out why he had not been able to have children. So he went to the Bible looking for answers. He found a passage in the Bible that made him think God was not happy. The passage said that you shall not take your brothers wife and that they will not be blessed with children. He decides to get a marriage annulment. Anne BoleynHenry has his eye on a woman named Anne Boleyn. As the marriage is being dissolved they get together and she becomes pregnant and his previous marriage is annulled. The child that is born is a female. Who is going to pay for this? Anne will. People start telling lies about her beinginvolved with other men, which she was not to Henry. He listens to the criticisms and was so upset about her having a daughter that he has her executed. A Son with Jane SeymourHenry still doesn't have a child. So he develops a relationship with Jane Seymour who has a son for him. She dies shortly after due to childbirth complications. Henry is now happy because he has a son.Anne of CleavesHenry is that married to Ann of Cleaves. The story is that Henry takes one look at Ann and decides he does not want her. Katherine HowardNow Henry has a son, but he still does not have a wife. Katherine Howard is brought to Henry. He likes her and marries her. Katherine Howard had been having relations with another man and continued to have relations with him after she was married. Henry executed her. Katherine ParrHenry marries one last time. He marries a woman named Katherine Parr. He died during their marriage and was in incredible bad shape. Henry left a will and in his will he assigned that his son would come to the throne. At this time his son was 9. His son Edward comes to the throne, but he suffered from the genetic maladies that the Tudors children tended to have. Mary I (Bloody Mary)1553-1558Better known as Bloody Mary. Mary Tudor wants to turn the Englishman back to the Catholic Church. She creates martyrs in doing this. Those who come to call themselves Puritans are able to use this against Catholics. She was unsuccessful in doing this because she dies young. She marries Charles V. Mary is 37 when she comes to the thrown and is no longer able to bear children. The will from Henry states that the remaining daughter comes to the Monarch.Wars of the roses 1455-1487A series of conflicts during that time. A battle between two families for control. It is a
