Election of 1824 o West 1 Henry Clay was a favorite son of the west 2 Andrew Jackson was also a fav Son from the west o North East o South 1 John Q Adams William H Crawford o In this election no candidate got a majority of electoral votes o Election decided by the HOR o Clay and Adams Clay supported Adams o Adams wins the Election of 1824 by a HOR choice o Corrupt Bargain if Clay put his support behind Adams then Adams would give him a o Andrew Jackson and his supporters thought this was bad because Jackson received nice spot in office the most votes o Dispute caused split in Demo Republic party 1 National Republicans supported Adams 2 Democrats supported Jackson o Adams was a better Secretary of State than he was President o Adams can never do anything that makes the Democrats happy Election of 1828 Andrew Jackson o National Republicans Adams o Democrats Jackson o Adams supporters denounced Jackson as a killer or barbaric They also claimed that Jackson and his wife Rachel lived together before o Jacksonians said that Adams was corrupted by foreigners and was a part of the slave marriage trade and female prostitution They claimed he was a gambler and said to ignore big problems and the only reason he got president is because of the corrupt bargain o West and South These areas solidly backed Jackson Also backed by small farmers and factory workers Middle Atlantic States Andrew Jackson won with a comfortable 68 of the Electoral Votes and 56 of the popular vote 4xs as many people voted in this election than in the past o Came from Poverty o His mother raised him with some siblings in SC o Very different from Adams o He was considered man of the people o Jackson came along at the perfect time o Campaign Slogan Adams can Wright Jackson can Fight o 1st westerner to become President o A man of Strong character colorful personality and firm beliefs o He wasn t afraid to speak his mind and tell people what was up o Slogan Let the people rule o He was the one and only President who everyone had an opinion of representative of the common people o Duty to carry out the common peoples demands o Adams people thought of Jackson Courageous Honest and Independence of Character Man on the White Horse Andrew Jackson s Presidency o People saw him as quick tempered and strong willed o Some people referred to Jackson as King Andrew 1 Jacksonian vs Jeffersonian Democracy o Participation in government o Jeff Thought that well educated people should run this country Jefferson was more of an elitist than Jackson o Reflection of American Society Jefferson believed that the republicans farmers was the most important part of society Jackson understood the life of the poor and that you can t simply depend upon agriculture o Democracy Jefferson s Inauguration The white House was the peoples house And it was their right to visit this house Political Aspects of the Jacksonian Era o Democracy in the States Increase the number of state and local officials o Democracy in Presidential Elections Only six states to be picked from for electoral votes o Democratic View of the Presidency Jackson used his powers granted to him by the constitution vigorously He was ready to deploy troops into SC when they questioned the government authorities Georgia didn t have the right to seize Indian Land Furthering the Will of the people was his view o The Spoils System Jackson thought that all the people should have the chance to be in office He thought that the person who won should have his supporters work under him and not his opposing sides people Whig Party o Favored 1 Rechartering the national 2 high protective tariffs 3 a strong central government o Common hatred of Andrew Jackson with a purple passion Martian Van Buren Elected o Jackson more popular than ever at the end of the 2nd term o Martin Van Buren of New York o Jackson wanted Van Buren to become president o They came up with the idea of having multiple candidates o Van Buren pulled twice as many votes than the Whip party candidates o Van Buren won election of 1836 very easily Panic of 1837 o Van Buren had to deal with panic and depression of the economy collapsing o State Chartered pet banks and western wildcat banks These were banks that came and went The made a lot of paper money without permission o Era of free banking o Speculation of public lands and the oversupply of paper money The Jacksonian era is where all of this was building up o Specie Circular Released in 1836 This ordered the US government to accept only gold or silver for payment of public lands Jackson put this into place Result of the Specie Circular Land prices dropped drastically This was terrible for the economy Banks closed Unemployment was way to common In the time of the specie circular Great Britain was experiencing an economic crisis and this also has a great role in the Economy of the US dropping Establishment of Independent Treasury o Democrats didn t like the idea of not having an established bank o Independent Treasury Act 1840 Sub treasuries Federal deposits These are not public or your common banks Government provides financial independence When the Whigs come into power the Repealed in 1841 The Democrats came back into power and repassed it in 1846 o This System lasted until early 1900 s when it was merged with the Federal Reserve System Whigs Elect Harrison and Tyler Van Buren o William Harrison was a favorite son o Whigs didn t elect multiple candidates again they learned their lesson against He was a military leader in the war of 1812 He was an Indian fighter He made a name for himself at the Battle of Tippecanoe The whig party tried to make him look like Andrew Jackson because the voters liked that type of image although he was very different from Jackson o This election was Dirty o John Tyler At heart a democrat But joined the whigs because of his hatred toward Andrew Jackson Tippecano and Tyler was the title of a campaign song for Harrison o Panic of 1837 Tyler Becomes President o Whig victory lived shortly o Harrison died of pneumonia o VP Tyler came into president Tyler believes in States rights and a weak central government These are principle of the Democratic Party Whig policies Tyler and the veto Tyler didn t have a happy time as president He finally broke with the Whigs completely The US expands to the Pacific 1835 to 1853 o Annexation of Texas Settlement by Americans Mexico moved into Texas after their independence with Spain Thousands of Mexicans moved into Texas US
