History Lecture 2 English and the British Monarchs 1485 1776 Henry Tudor 7th 1485 1509 o Tudor Monarch o Founder of the henry dynasty o Put his nephews to death o Best position militarily to rule o Lancastrians are foes o Henry was defeated by Richard 3rd in Boswell Field in 1485 o Richard 3rd s body disappeared and recovered in modern day o Richard 3rd Suffered from a bad case of scoliosis o Richard 3rd lost because of friendly traitors o Elizabeth of York was the daughter of Richard 3rd o Henry wanted Elizabeth to marry so that their blood ran on both sides of the Richard and Henry blood line o First son Arthur and when time comes to marry he marries Catherine the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella most powerful monarchs of this time o Spain in 1485 1492 was the strongest power in the world o Arthur died from hereditary illness at a very young age o Henry had another son named Henry 8th o Then Henry 8th married Catherine because of ties to money in Spain had to ask the Pope Julius the 2nd for dispensation because they were to closely related o Treaty of marriage was signed 1502 Henry 9 and Catherine was 15 o Henry 7th died in 1509 and Henry the 8th took the throne 17 years of age 22 april 1509 from 1509 1547 o Henry 8th was a famous and infamous individual o Had red hair very athletic considered to be very handsome o Loved to hunt Could ride four horses into the ground o After his athletic days he got rather Fat o Henry 8th didn t like the politics and government although his father loved it o Woolsey was a man that came into henry 8ths life early and helped him with the government and politics o People from the church usually could read and write and Woolsey told Henry 8th that he would do all the work and did it well o Henry 8ths father married him early so he could have sons o Henry 8ths sons were born still or died shortly after o By the late 1520 s he realized something was wrong with the conception of male children Leviticus 20 21 if a man takes a brothers wife he shall be childless o Henry 8th needed an annulment so he could bear sons o He claims the marriage never should have existed because the Pope didn t have the authority to marry them o If brethren dwell together and one of them die and have no child the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger So she marries her husband s brother o Levirate marriage o If Henry 8th doesn t have a son then it will endanger his dynasty o Thomas Moore knew he was playing with fire with befriending King Henry 8th o Charles 5th was the nephew of Catherine o Plymouth did not grant the annulment and henry separated the church from great Britain o Thomas Cranmer was the last archbishop of Canterbury to be legally inducted into that position o Henry remarried to Anne in hopes of a son and has another daughter named Elizabeth the famous one o People claim that Anne was unfaithful and he Beheads her o He them remarries Jane Semore and has a boy with her named o Principal Secretary Thomas Cromwall wanted to solidify with Edward 1st son protestant states o Thomas Cromwell sets up a marriage with the duke Anne of cleeds with Henry 8th she s butt ass ugly and he has nothing to do with her and he kills Thomas Cromwall for this o Henry 8th marries again to a woman named Catherine Howard and a very prominent name in England o Catherin Howard Cheated on Henry 8th continuously and then he beheaded her in the early 1540s o Catherine Parr was his last wife in which so took care of him in his old age as he developed numerous problems o He acquired a sore that oozed all the time that caused him much pain o Catherine parr outlived Henry 8th o Henry 8th declared himself as the head of the church in England instead of the Pope He was catholic o Three Children o First child to be heir to the throne Male only Edward came to the throne at the age of 9 Numerous health problems o His uncle Edward Semore took control of the government because Edward was to young o Dudley in 1549 1553 took control o Edward was dying and in the process tried to make someone other that the second person in the will claim the throne o Northumberlane took control for a few days o Lady Jane Gray was queen Executed o Marry came to the throne
