HIST 2610 1st Edition Lecture 6Outline of Last Lecture Spain Continued…Outline of Current Lecture Result of European Expansion – Adopt MercantilismThe Colonial PeriodSlaveryJohn Smith Continued….Current LectureResults of European Expansion Continued….Adopt Mercantilism - mercantilists argued that a nation must:1. attract the maximum amount of gold and silver. wealth is measured in richness of possessions2. export more that what is imported and receive payment for the difference in gold and silver3. increase exports by stimulating domestic industries with bounties4. discourage imports of foreign manufactures by levying tariffs 5. acquire colonies to assure markets for manufactured goods and to guarantee sources of raw materials6. restrict colonial manufacturing and7. forbid colonies to trade with any country except the mother country.Above is the basic theory about mercantilism. The Colonial PeriodColonization by England / BritainThe early colonies were in the Virginia area. These colonies were founded by Protestants. There were 4 original colonies. By the end of the life of the colonies, only 800 people remained alive.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. He knew that the people would be in trouble and die if the did not have proper shelter for winter. People did not do this. Only 80 colonists of the original 104 remained alive at this point. Some of the colonists brought their wives with them (this will become important later). In 1609, John Smith was accidentally burnedby a gun powder explosion and had to return back to England to get medical help. SlaveryWhat became the American system of slavery was rooted in Virginia in 1619In 1619….Wives were sent over for the bachelor men. A man had to be able to pay for the woman's transportation to Virginia (the price of 20 pounds of tobacco). When they get to Virginia, they are married. They are married under the Anglican Church. With the women coming over, the Virginia Colony begins to increase in population. His goal is to look into the interior of the Northwest Passage for gold. He and the others who went with them run into a group of Native Americans. His companions were killed, but Smith was taken to Wahansonacock. He does not understand their language. Smith believes that they are talking about what to do with them when they take him with them. Smith says in his memoir that a young girl is talking to Wahansonacock and believes that she is convincing him to let her go. John Smith believes she saved his life because he was later released. Her nickname was Pochahontas and her actual name is Matowaka. Pochahontis does not have a relationship with him, but with John Rolfe. Pochahontis converts to Christianity. She marries John Rolfe and they go to England. She becomes called Lady Rebecca when they go back to England. She died of a brutal disease shortlyafter they made it to
