HIST 2610 2nd Edition Lecture 8 Outline of Last LectureResults of European Expansion Outline of Current Lecture The Virginia CompanyNew England ColoniesNative Americans and PilgrimsMassachusetts BayBostonRoger WilliamsCurrent LectureNote: These notes are an edited version of those belonging to Kourtney Logan as I was absent for Monday’s lecture.The Virginia Company1618 Sir Edwin Sandys is named treasurer of the Virginian company. Up til then the company dictated what went on, but in 1619 the company allows the general assembly of VirginiaThis becomes the House of Burgesses (there are 11 settlements in Virginia, 2 members from each make up the house) FIRST LEGISLATURE IN THE AMERICAN COLONIESJames III (King) names a commission to investigate the house and this will go before a court. Court decides to revoke the charter in 1624 VIRGINIA IS A ROYAL COLONYVirginians continue to elect members to the House of Burgesses until 1639 when the monarchs recognizethe HouseNew England ColoniesPlymouth is the first established colony. Is established by peoples who follow the Puritan teachings of Robert Brown. He taught that good Christians need to be separated form the Anglican Church. These people are called Brownian secratists.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Didn’t like it, approached the London Company if they could go to Virginia and establish a colony there. Merchants fund their travel and they book passage aboard the Mayflower.35 people, they land north of the Virginia Company. Before setting foot on land, they sign the Mayflower Compact, binding them to the idea that they will follow whatever government that is set up once they are on land. Plymouth is established when they reach landNative Americans and PilgrimsNative American leader Massasoit is interested in living in peace with the Pilgrims and vice versa.Squanto and Samoset meet with Pilgrims, Samoset knows a little English, Squanto speaks fluent English but is not a member of Massasiot’s tribe. They teach the Plymouth colonists how to survive (fish in the winter, plant crops to eat and how to raise them)1621-Pilgrims have a feast to give thanks for God helping them to survive. Natives were invited and all brought food. FIRST THANKSGIVING.William Bradford - one of the first governor’s. Made changes in how the colony is run, changed from a communal colony (form of communism) to the idea of each adult male receiving a plot of land to work on for his family. This way, they made enough money to pay the merchants back for their travel.1691 The Plymouth colony is absorbed by Massachusetts BayMassachusetts BayFounded by PuritansIdea is to establish a city on a hill that the English could look to, to see what happens when a true colony is established based on the church1628-land1629-acquire rights to land1630-1,000 Puritans come overCharter does not say that their “headquarters” must be in the mother land more authority over their own colony and more protections against the monarchy interfering with their colony16…thousands of Puritans arrivePuritan church is the established church of the Puritan colony, no religious liberty. IF YOU DON’T JOIN -THE CHURCH, YOU HAVE NO SAY IN GOVERNING THE COLONY. IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE CHURCH, YOU ARE BANNED FORM THE COLONYBostonBoston is established and becomes the center of government.Thomas Hooker disagreed with the level authority that the church and Boston had over people’s beliefs and lifestyle. A number of his followers go ahead of him and in 1635 three small settlements are created. In1639 Hooker wanted greater democracy within the colonies, is responsible for the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. These orders would provide for the choosing of a governor, limit terms of office, assure fair taxation. This document appears to be the first written constitution.1662- the one colony of Connecticut is establishedRoger Williams He came over form England in 1631 to Boston. He was a linguistic prodigy and absorbed languages. He believed the government in Mass Bay has too much power over the lives of the colonists. He wants separation of church and state. This does not go over well in Massachusetts. In1635 Williams is tried and found guilty, banished from colony. He travels to the Naraganzun Indians and learns their language. WithJohn Clarke, negotiates with them to purchase land. Williams wants the permission to settle and he insists on paying them for the land. He establishes the Providence Plantations. People come to the colonybecause they disagree with the government of Massachusetts Bay.Ann Hutchison - An educated woman who comes to the Massachusetts Bay and has meetings after Sunday sermon at her home, having people discuss and analyzing the sermon that had just been given which is not considered to be the place of a woman. Antinomianism: it was reported that she was teaching that the clergy and sermon are not required to havea good relationship with God. She is run out of the colony and finds herself in Providence Plantations. AnnHutchison 1643 dies in a raid by Native Americans. Williams receives a charter and the monarchy recognizes Providence Plantations as a colony.1622: John Mason and Sir Fernando Gorges are given rights by the King to land north of Massachusetts Bay. Both men establish small trading posts and fishing stations to try to make money.1629: Holdings are divided between the two of themMason = New Hampshire Gorges = MaineSettlers from the bay colony migrate in 1630 causes conflict between Mass bay and Gorges and Mason (especially Mason). Puritans want to claim this area, attempt to annex New Hampshire and Maine. In 1679, the King grants to New Hampshire a charter that recognizes it as a colonyColony of Maryland (NOT PART OF NEW ENGLAND)George Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore - A friend of Charles the 1st, Charles through Irish nobility makes George 1st Lord Baltimore. George establishes colony as a haven for fellow Catholics with a charter that Charles gives him.Cecilius Calvert (2nd Lord Baltimore) – He establishes the colony. Sole proprietor.First settlement (called Maryland) was established by Leonard Calvert (Cecilius’ younger brother). In1634, St. Mary’s colony is established. Tobacco grows in the area of this colony.
