HIST 2610 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Last Lecture • Class Instructional and Review of Syllabus Outline of Current Lecture • Migration• Native American CivilizationsCurrent LectureNative American SettlementsMigrationHuman beings first appeared in Africa -> then Europe and Asia - then to AmericaTheory about Native Americans and their Migrations: Over 10,000 years ago, the first group of Asians move across Asia through Alaska on dry land. This is known as the Amerind Migration. The Second group populated North and South America which is know as the Nadene Migration).Lastly, the third group migrated around the Northern Areas around the Arctic Circle in 7,000 BC known as the Inuit Migration (also known as the Eskimo Migration).The above is a description of the Native American Migration and how it came to be. In a nutshell, Asians Migrated to the Americas who were then given the name "Native Americans"Native American CivilizationsMayanAztekOlmecTotonacToltecIncaTimeline for the life of these civilizationsMayan ~50BC -> ~AD900__I_____________________________________________________________________ I I Olmec ~1200BC -> ~50BC Totonac AD300 -> AD900 I Toltec AD900 -> 1250 I Aztec AD1325 -> 1521CalendarsThe Mayan Civilizations was Known for their Mayan Calendars. Today they are considered a piece of art.The Olmec Civilization also had their own Calendars.There are 2.-One is 52 years long-One is very shortBoth Caledars start and eventually end at the same time.Aztec EmpireThey participated in the use of slavery. They also used Olmenac Calendars. They believed that when the two calendars coincided that the human race would be destroyed. In order to prevent this from happening, they would sacrifice one of their own people and remove the still beating heart from their chest. When the spaniards came amongst the Aztecs, the Aztec population thought that they may be their Gods that they worshiped. They then realized they were not after spending much time with them and instead gained the diseases that the Spaniards unknowinglybrought with them. Eventually the Aztec Empire did fall to the Spaniards. The Inca EmpireThe Incas referred to themselves as the Quechuan people. The name Inca is actually what they use to refer to the Emperor or head of their Empire. They were located by Manchu Pichu.They figured out how to farm at high elevations.They are considered to be an illiterate society because they had no written language, but taughtthemselves to memorize massive amounts of information. There were also people who were designated messengers who would learn paragraphs of information from the Inca and share it with the people.Like the Aztecs, the Incas also crossed paths with the Spaniards. The spaniards wanted the silverthat the Incas possessed. They also eventually lost to the Spaniards.Mound Building Cultures of North AmericaAdena-Hopewell People500BC -> 484They were know for their mounds of which there are 3.1. The Great Serpent Mound - found in Chilliothe, OH.2. Mound in Louisiana3. Wife of the "Great Sun" mound (created by the Mississippi Mound Builders) found in Cahokia,IL.Hohokam and Anasazi SitesADI -> 1300The Hohokam and Anasazi evolved into various tribes that lived along the sides of cliffs. This living situation caused the disintegration of central tribes.
