1st human settlement in the New World North America was the Aleuts eskimos Introduction into American History o Arrived 12 000 20 000 years ago o From Siberia o Stone aged hunters and gatherers Vikings landed in the New World in 1000AD o Leif Ericson was the leader o Settled L Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland Lasted about three years o Vikings were the 1st Europeans to land in the new world Don t get credit because nothing changed after they came By 1492 descendants of the original Aleuts spread out throughout the world all the way down to the tip of South America o Lots of variety Nomads Different languages Different religions Different technology Mayans Aztecs and Incas very advanced o Aztecs even had pumping water calendars and very large cities o Even most advanced Indians didn t have the wheel o Many people s perceptions of natives is wrong Most think of Plain Indians o About 8 000 000 Indians when Columbus landed in the New World Half lived in South America 3 million in central America 1 million in North America o Jamestown was the first successful English settlement in North America Why did Europeans go to the New World 1607 o Gold Riches Ship companies spread rumors of how easy it was to find gold and goods not found in Europe o Glory for the mother country o God Bringing God to the Natives Escaping persecution New World Pilgrims left because of persecution o Spanish had the most land in the New World as well as were the first ones from Europe o Russians owned Alaska in the 1740s o French were in Canada and Louisiana middle US o Portuguese were in Brazil o Smaller other colonies in the Caribbean o 1st English colony was Roanoke Unsuccessful Raleigh was the leader Colony was around from 1584 1587 No one knows what happened to the colonists there o 1st permanent colony was Jamestown 1st successful colony Founded 1607 Founded by the Virginia Company Also called London Company Named after King James 1 Average life expectancy at the beginning was 6 months Low swampy land with frequent flooding o On James River Many diseases Colony barely survived Starving time 1609 1610 Purpose of the colony was to make money for the company Sent wrong type of people to the colony Gentleman Needed workers John Smith stepped up and saved the colony Became leader and made people work to survive
