The popes will be forced to resign and one person will be named pope. The problem with this, however, is that it will cause more Europeans to question the Church. Important Movements on the Road to the English ReformationLollardy (14th-15th cent.)Wyclif was a professor at Balliol University and wrote 95 theses. He has theories about essences. He beings to question some of the practices in the Church, which then makes him question the Church's theology. He did not believe in having a hierarchy of priesthood in the Church. He believed the Pope exercised too much authority. Because of his beliefs, he loses his position. Important Movements on the Road to the English Reformation-Humanism-Lutheranism. Luther was an Augustinian Monk and a doctor of Theology. Dr. Martin Luther had issues with some of the practices of the Church that had to do with forgiveness of sin. Throughout his life, he believes he has done everything that he needs to do to be forgiven for his sins. He said he always felt oppressed and guilty. His guilt was gone when he had an epiphany that faith alone in God is what is necessary to be forgiven for his sins rather than the rituals of the Church. Calvinism: The Most ImportantCalvin was born in 1509. Henry VIII came the thron in 1509. Martin Luther is about to come to his epiphany. According to Calvin, if you want to lightly understand God and the Bible, you need two things. The Bible and his book he wrote on the Bible, "Institutes of the Christian Religion", written in 1559. Basic Calvinist Beliefs:1. Only two books needed:Bible Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion (1559)2.
