English British Monarchs 1485 1776 1 Henry VII 1485 1509 Tudor o Founder of the Tudor dynasty and came to throng by overthrowing his nephews o Lancastrian o Plotted to invade England and defeat Richard III at Bosworth field his solders turned against him in battle brother is Edward IV o He married Elizabeth York who was on the other side o Spain was the most powerful country at the time so a marriage was set up between Arthur Henry VII son and Catherine of Eragon daughter of the two monarchs of Spain o Arthur and Katherine marry in 1501 and Arthur ends up dying at a young age o Henry VII has another son named Henry VIII who would end up marrying Catherine with a dispensation an okay from the pope for the two to marry in 1502 o Henry VII dies in 1509 2 Henry VIII 1509 1547 Tudor o Had red hair and was considered a very handsome and athletic man o Was 17 when he came to throne o Wanted nothing to do with government resulting in Woolsey taking care of everything o Catherine had numerous miscarriages only had one daughter named Mary o He thought this was a punishment from God for marrying his brothers widow o Tries to get an annulment so he can remarry o Thomas Moore Lord Chancellor of England would not grant this because of issues going on with Rome at the time o Charles V is the nephew of Katherine o Henry VIII decides to separate the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church Universal Church which will begin the change of the Church of England o Thomas Cranmer then becomes the Arch Bishop and grants the annulment o He then marries Anne Boleyn and has a daughter named Elizabeth rumors spread that Anne is unfaithful and Henry VIII has her executed o He then remarries with Jane Seymour and has a son named Edward Jane dies after childbirth due to complications o Thomas Cranmer set up marriage with Anne of Cleves and Henry VIII they meet afterwards and he calls of the marriage o Thomas Cranmer is executed o Henry then marries Catherine Howard rumors spread that she is unfaithful and he is o He then remarries again the Catherine Parr and she would take care of him in his old age o Takes throne at the age of 9 after Henry VIII dies o Because of age Edward Seymour 1547 1549 and John Dudley 1549 1553 take care of o We see the church start to become more protestant under him o Jane Gray will take throne upon Edwards death July 6th July19th Mary returns and she government actions is then executed executed and outlive him 3 Edward VI 1547 1553 Tudor o Mary will ascend the throne 4 Mary I 1553 1558 Tudor 5 Elizabeth I 1558 1603 Tudor o Considered and illegitimate child bastard o She is the age of 37 when she comes to thrown o She had grown closer to the Catholic faith o Took down the Arch Bishop Thomas Cranmer who was replaced by Reginald Pole o She marries Prince Philip of Spain son of Charles V and would eventually become the King of Spain o She wanted to have a son with Philip to try and reestablish the Church of Rome o Known as Bloody Mary o She is not able to complete the change of the Church o Englishmen still have a bad taste with a woman ruling o She is Protestant o She is in charge of putting in the Elizabethian settlement that put in a Protestant Church o Via Media the middle path ie Church o The exiled under Mary I Puritans come back and believe that she is going to make the changes necessary o Puritans wish the purify the church they are much more Protestant o Puritans will not succeed under Elizabeth o She does not marry and has no children to take the throne after her o The person who was on the throne of Scotland kin to Elizabeth will take the throne o Was on the throne of Scotland VI and ascends the throne after Elizabeth s death I o Great grandson of Margaret Tudor o Kind of Scotland and England o Does not get along with the Puritans o King James Bible was named after him o Wanted to continue the name of Via Media o High Church Anglocism leans towards Catholicism which is where James fell o If Parliament did not go along with him it did not matter o Very much High Church o Son of James o As his reign goes on more and more Puritans are elected to Parliament this will causes issues between them o Has to go to Parliament to get more money and he has to make promise in order to get this money although he does not follow through with these o From 1629 1640 he decides to not call onto Parliament o Puritans will go to war with Charles o Civil War I will begin in 1642 and end in 1645 o Charles is captured in Civil War II and executed 1648 o His son Charles tries to fight and fails and is exiled in the 3rd Civil War 1649 1651 6 James VI I 1603 1625 Stuart 7 Charles I 1625 1649 Stuart 8 Charles II 1660 1685 Stuart o 2nd time reigning after being exiled o Advanced Protestants never trusted him because they thought of him as Roman Catholic o Built a strong Royal Navy o Womanizer o By 1685 this is a problem because his brother would come to throne and people trusted him much less 9 James II 1685 1688 Stuart o His Protestant wife dies o He then marries a Catholic woman o His brother is Charles II o He has a Catholic son o Is in exile which begins the Glorious Revolution his son not considered legitimate 10 William III Mary II 1689 1694 1702 Stuart o Mary II is the daughter of James II o Protestant o Mary insisted that her and her husband be considered co monarchs this is accepted o Mary will dies in 1694 o William will reign until 1702 o They had no children together o Solidification of the Protestant Church occurs during this time 11 Anne 1702 1714 Stuart o Daughter of James II o Protestant o Her son dies before her and no one can take the throne o In 1701 an Act Settlement was established that Sophia granddaughter of James VI and the heirs of her body can take the throne 12 George George I 1714 1727 Hanover o Son of Sophia and will ascend the throne after Anne o Never spoke English only spoke German o Never spent much time in England 13 George II 1727 1760 Hanover o Son of George I o Last King to lead troops into battle it was considered dangerous o Spoke English and spent more time in England but isn t as hands on as the
