Chapter 4 The self and Interaction Socialization and Micro Sociology 09 24 2012 Culture is that symbolic organization which socializes us and cultivates out fantasies about a world we do not experience directly Playing Barbie Barbie allows for those to look back at the past and express a meaning of being a housewife and everything is nice escape from reality to their imagination the use of Barbie allows many to escape into their own worlds or the idealistic worlds they find a safe place in an unlikely place society Micro sociology Blumer spokes person for micro sociology How we interact how we read each other communicate which makes us who we are From macro to micro From macro to micro o Culture institutions o Social structure and culture way to complex and have to break them down into a micro sociology Almost meaningless because it is so broad o Social structures groups We are leaving out a lot o the complexity to zoom in and look at things to see how people act in their own environments Society happens moment to moment Society lives inside us it is not a force o The development of the self o The self is our personal identity that is separate and different from all other people What makes me different and unique o Sociologist believe the self is created and modified through interaction in our lives o Symbolic interaction and theories of the self o Charles Cooley believed that ones sense of self depends on seeing oneself reflected in interactions with others The looking glass self refers to the notion that the self develops through our perception of others evaluations and appraisals of us The idea is that we need other people because they will show us our own reflection We learn from their reactions to us of who we are This is all happening within our heads We are imagining how we look to other people Its all in your head we are interpreting our environment How do I look Phase one How do I think I look to others Phase two Self doubt Always room for distortion How doe sit make me feel Phase three How am I doing Which will than change our behaviors And emotional response Our interpretations on ourselves George Herbert Mead expanded Cooley s idea Mead also believed that the self was created through social interaction and that this process start in childhood o The I and me two phases of the self Chapter 4 09 24 2012 Looking glass self we have ideas of who we are based on the feedback from other people Herbert blummer He developed a theory to explain prejudice He talks about three factors o Where is one s in group positioned in society Where should our in group be positioned compared to out groups Perception of out group threats to our in group position Erving Goffman stage Building off previous ideas If we take all this and we as human beings are like actors on a If we want to understand we need to look at how they present themselves on a daily basis We adjust our behavior on who we are speaking too We are always looking out for ourselves Dramaturgic theory compares social interaction to the theater where individuals take on roles and act them out for an audience Goffman sees social life as a sort of game where we work to control the oppressions others have of us a process he called impression management 09 24 2012
