Soc 001 1st Edition Exam # 2 Study Guide Lectures: 1 - 12The code of the streets”, 12-Anderson- Function of “the code of the streets”:o The code of the streets has arisen form the street culture that consists of the informal rules governing interpersonal public behavior, including violence. The oppositional culture, “The streets”, has norms that are often opposed to those of mainstream society.The rules (or code of the streets) describe both a proper demeanor and a proper way to respond if challenged; they regulate the use of violence within the community. “Survivalitself, let alone respect, cannot be taken for granted; you have to fight for your place in the world”. It shows that one is capable of violence and mayhem when required, and that one can take care of oneself.- Main difference between street and decent attitudes towards police: Decent families might still respect the police within mainstream society, whereas the streets blatantly disregard the police. The police are thought to represent the dominant white society, and might not even show up when called by the inner city black society. Therefore, the residents of the inner-city feel it a need to take matters into their own hands and create their own set of laws to govern the people of the streets, as a means of protecting themselves and their loved ones against any type of aggression. “The street code emerges where the influence of the police ends and personal responsibility for one’s safety is felt to begin”.- Anderson is describing a subculture within inner-city neighborhoods because residents (normallyyouths of poorer families) feel cut-off from the mainstream society. They feel as though the police defend the upper class and middle class whites, and do not defend the inner-city blacks such as themselves, so they must resort to their own means of protection. They sense few opportunities to gain respect form mainstream culture, and so they devise a set of rules by which to earn respect outside of the mainstream norms. The two subcultures being described are “decent” and “street” families. - The four major social causes for the “inclination to violence” are industrial and economic decline, proliferation of guns, heavy use/easily accessibility of drugs, and persistent poverty.- The code of the street is an adaption to a means of obtaining respect, or “juice”, for oneself. It revolves around the means of presenting oneself so as not to seem as socially deficient, as well as being able to protect oneself if problems and aggression should arise. The code of the streets requires one to show a certain predisposition for violence. - The street children often learn the values of the street and that “might makes right” from their home environments. Often, even though they love their children, parents are physically and emotionally abusive to their children to deal with their own frustrations as well as prepare them for the brutal streets as their parents had done to them beforehand. Children receive abuse fromtheir parents, or witness fights between parents and siblings, and see that the victorious is always more respected. They share these experiences with other children, accumulating their knowledge about certain values of the streets and learn from these experiences. - Jackets, sneakers, and gold jewelry might also play into self-image, and show a willingness to possess things that require defending. A boy wearing desirable clothes submits himself to possible attacks from another who might not be able to afford the jacket, and so he must protecthimself and make sure to not be dissed. If the boy does not wear these types of clothes to avoid such confrontations, he might not be allowed to hang out with certain crowds, and makes himseem “socially deficient”. These valued objects build up a person’s identity, allowing them to fight in the constant competition for respect. - Oppositional culture: culture whose norms are often consciously opposed to those of mainstream society- Decent: strong, loving, normally opposed to the values of the code, yet familiarize children with it so that they can negotiate the inner-city environment. These people have some faith in the mainstream society, hoping that the future will become better for, if not themselves, their children. They are usually the “working poor” and value hard work, self-reliance and will make sacrifices for their children. They take a strong interest in their children’s schooling, go to church regularly and have almost an obsessive concern about problematic situations and getting into trouble- Street: oppositional culture to the “decents”; culture that has its own values and norms which have serious consequences if violated. Usually the people without jobs to pay for living that cannot cope with the physical and emotional demands of their children. More invested in the code of the street than decent people are, and often resort to drugs and alcohol rather than providing food and paying bills. Have a deep bitterness and anger within them, and easily last out at others. Children learn from their parents to solve any kind of interpersonal problem by hitting or resorting to instant violence. - The code of the streets: see first bullet point- Respect: loose issue at the heart of the code, referring to people being “treated right” or grantedthe deference that one deserves; viewed as an external entity that is hard-won but easily lost, soit must be constantly guarded- Juice: street term for share of respect16-Zimbardo- It was crucial to randomly assign the roles because it shows that these results could happen to anyone put in the situation. Simply assigning the role of the guard or the prisoner determined their actions for the duration of the experiment- Zimbardo’s research taught us that an individual's status strongly influences their personality andactions. the participants abided by their roles and eventually acted as if their current situation was reality- At the beginning of the experiment, there were no psychological differences between the students assigned. They were all mature, emotionally stables, normal, intelligent college students from middle class homes throughout the US and Canada. None had a record and all were relatively homogeneous on many dimensions initially- At the end of the experiment, it temporarily undid a
