Public issuesCurrent Lecture- In order to make the familiar strange, you must pretend that you have no idea what you’re seeing; ask “What is going on, why is that?” and pretend you have no clue.o Act as if you are a stranger from Mars observing this for the first time- Reason #1 that we need to make the familiar strange:o Sociological eye is “easier said than done”o We are so used to our daily lives that we seem to go through them as “horses with blinders”, where people intentionally put blinders on themselves to block out all of the unimportant things (not good for sociologists!!)o We fail to notice what’s going on around us, because we tend to unintentionally ignore detailso We are creatures of habit; we notice what we want to/are used to noticingo It’s hard to break out of an observational rut; because we are so used to observing the world in our own set ways- Reason #2 that we need to make familiar strange:o We may notice something that we haven’t noticed beforeo We might ask questions we didn’t think to ask before - Why do people stop at stoplights?o You don’t know these reasons (You’re an observer from Mars) There may be police Stoplight cameras You might hit another car or pedestrianThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
