Bioreactor for Tissue Engineering Team Bioreactor Week 7 March 8 to March 14 2007 Team Members Karen Chen Team leader Richard Bamberg Communications Rachel Mosher BSAC Dustin Gardner BWIG Client Dr Email ogle wisc edu Problem Statement The aim of this project is to redesign and reproduce a pre existing Bioreactor that is specific to the culturing of human vocal fold fibroblasts The existing design models the vibration of a single vocal fold under tensile stress and provokes the elongation of fibroblasts and the subsequent formation of an extra cellular matrix characteristic of vocal fold fibroblasts Our goal is to improve upon this model by simulating contact between two vibrating vocal folds and potentially finding a better substitute for Tecoflex because its porosity is non uniform and the pore size is too large The bioreactor will be made from a T flask with elastic vibrators immersed in a buffer which will function as vocal folds This device needs to be easily replaced with disposable parts along with 2 pairs of artificial vocal folds and a capacity to generate computer controlled vibrations at a frequency 0 400Hz Restatement of Team Goals This week we plan to wrap up the PowerPoint slides and present it to the class on Friday We also planned to meet Prof Ogle and client Susan to discuss the issues regarding to the construction of the bioreactor We also need to start to work on the mid semester paper over the weekend and finish it before the coming Wednesday Individual Goals Dustin Update website research on components Karen Send out the progress report research on speakers and actuators Rachel Research on components discuss with people in the related field Richard Send out contacting emails between the client and the team research on components Summary of Accomplishment z The team met on Thursday Mar 8 to compile the files for the mid semester presentation All team members brought their individual sections that they were responsible for and put the files into a complete PPT file We also included the video of the vocal folds in the PPT where the length of the video was adjusted to fit the time during the presentation z The team presented the mid semester presentation to the BME students during class time and were video taped through out However there was some confusion with the presentation room with the client which caused the client to miss the presentation z The team discussed some issues regarding to the voice coil actuator with the advisor on Friday after the presentation The team decided to go about building the prototype z The team met on Tuesday Mar 13 to compile the mid semester report Rachel brought up some good points regarding the speak performance in relation to the voice coil actuator z Karen turned the hard copy of the final version of the mid semester report Statement of Team Goals This week we plan to settle and problems about the voice coil actuator We might not take the speaker components apart Instead we will deal with an actuator We must have the parts of the prototype fixed and start the ordering of the components The team shall decide on the details of the prototype We will meet with the client on Friday to discuss more about this Difficulties We are currently facing the problem on how to come up with a realistic and doable design of the bioreactor as a project The construction of the bioreactor by the previous builders seemed to be very complicated Activities Dustin Karen Rachel 03 12 2007 Working on the report 2 00h 03 13 2007 Researching for parts 1 00h 03 13 2007 Working on the
