Industrialization and Its Effects Technology Nature and Changing Society Industrial Revolution 10 06 2014 Similar to the computer revolution o The world functions very differently now Like the computer revolution it raises ethical questions Why is this happening and why is this happening in England How does this affect people A sustained serious of changes in the way goods are produced What does that mean for society when things are made differently For people Three Major Industries Advances in coal mining Heavy metal and steel Textiles o Cotton and wool Why Textiles in England Drive for innovation o Flying shuttle Wrap thread around and put it through the loom takes a long time manually but this makes it faster makes weaving faster Now weaving is faster than spinning the spinners cant keep up o Spinning Jenny o Power Looms Puts the pressure back on weaving Labor and Capital Enclosed Banking Raw Materials and Markets o You need someone to sell you the product and you need people to buy the product o Buying unprocessed material that gets sold to England where they make the fabric they sell it at home o Africa is not just a place to get slaves it s a place where you can sell things as well Free Market Ideology o Adam smith o The individual entrepreneur will do better now government will stay out of the way and they will not intervene The government is also keeping people out of the way of entrepreneurs o France outlaws guilds Railways o Was first primarily for the betterment of business Coal mine to coal processor to shipping o Then facilitates the transfer of people o Leads to census of national identity o Things get better industrialization helps them and they get access to better things fresh food trains there socioeconomic position gets better Working classes o In the long run it will help but in the short run its horrible its disastrous tenements and densely populated areas Loss of skill and creativity New Economic Unit From family to individual o
