Southern patriarchy: “Little Kingdoms” Current Lecture Virginia Slavery continued: •The shift to a race-based slave society is also caused by Bacon’s Rebellion •Servants and slaves tried to overthrow the government and burn down the town •Slaves and white servants would work together, rose up together, and were treated the same •Bacon’s Rebellion was a turning point because it pushed Virginia to adopt a slave labor force •Servants were disgruntled when they were freed and there was no land-this would not be a problem with slave labor because they wouldn't expect to be freed •When the poor whites and blacks attacked the elites it created a cross racial alliance that terrified the Virginia gentry •They needed a way to control the poor whites and slaves so there was no more rising up •They were now separated so they couldn't form any more alliances •Elites built up racism in poor whites to make them join their side •After Bacon’s Rebellion the racist laws gave poor whites more political power and eased up on taxes to ease discontent and separate the two groups •Elites built a cross race alliance to ease class tensions and avoid more rebellions •Previously there was racial prejudices but they still believed they could civilize the slaves Examples of racism laws: •1669- it is legal for a master to kill a slave but not a white servants because slaves were their property so if they killed them it was an accident!•1680- 30 lashes to the bareback of any slave who threatens or strikes a white man no matter what the class-gave servants more power •1705- masters were forbidden from whipping a white servant in the nude •1698- interracial marriage was outlawed and white women couldn't have sex with a black man, if a white woman got pregnant from a black man then she would be sentenced to indentured servitude for 5 years and her child would be sentenced 31 years and their child would be sentenced for 3 years; if a white man had a child with a black woman, the child was a slave •1691- Planters couldn't free their slaves unless they payed for their way out of Virginia •1705- slaves were not allowed to own property such as cows, pigs, and horses and if they did it would be given to poor whites •1723- free blacks lost the right to vote, carry arms, and it became fully illegal for planters to free their slaves unless they got specific permission from the legislature •Slavery ensured that all whites felt a sense of freedom, liberty, and power •With the rise of slavery, class divisions got bigger, but whites had a feeling of superiority Slavery in South Carolina: •South Carolina was founded in the 1660s when the King gave a plot of land to aristocrats who had been loyal to him; they profited from it •The settlers coming to South Carolina were from the English Island Barbados •Barbados was already a slave colony with sugar- Barbados was getting overcrowded with no land so people moved to the Americas •South Carolina had a very generous headlight system where people were given 150 acres for going to the Carolinas, 150 acres for every family member they brought with them, and 150 acres for every slave that they brought •Carolina began as a slave colony and was a slave society •South Carolina had slaves but no cash crop because sugar and tobacco wouldn't grow •They started to grow rice which was taught to them by the slaves •Carolina planters became the richest planters in the American colonies!•Rice is more labor intensive than tobacco so they needed more slaves •Carolina had a black majority that could be as high as 90% •Virginia only got to about 40% black •A high majority rate created a fear of slave rebellions, so South Carolina put strict restrictions on slaves so they couldn't communicate from plantation to plantation •Whites had a sense of paranoia and had to bring their guns to church in case of a slave revolt •South Carolina had a small group of elites with political power and economic power who saw themselves as little kings ruling over their kingdoms and their slaves were their subjects-had deference and patriarchy with each other •Slave owners exploited obedience and love from their slaves because they gave them food and
