Paternal Breeds (colored breeds)a. Duroc: #2 in US- Originated in Spain- Red with BIG, FLOPPY EARS- Known for growth and leannessb. Hampshire: #3 in US- Originated in Kentucky- BLACK WITH WHITE BELT OVER BOTH FRONT LEGS- Erect ears- Muscle and Leannessc. Pietran- Known for MUSCLE- Originated in Belgium- Erect ears- White with black spots- **SUSCEPTIBLE TO STRESS  POOR QUALITYd. Spotted- Originated in Indianae. Berkshire: NO REAL VALUE FOR REG. Genetic companies select PIC C-22 gilt and PIC 280 Boars which are used in slaughtering… known as terminal breeds** All pigs are going to be made crossbreeds, except for Berkshire.**The Swine Industry has tried SUPER hard to target consumer demands… not so good for pigs.III. Breeds of Farm AnimalsA. Sheepa. Ewe Breeds (medium – fine wool)1. Merino: Originated in France2. Rambouillet: Originated in France, #4 in US3. Romney (medium quality): more textile oriented**Female (merino/rambouillet mix)  bred to meat breedsb. Ram Breeds (meat breeds)1. Suffolk: large & tall 2. Dorset: all white originated in England3. Hampshire: Most girth- Wool cap and leggings- Suffolk = #1 in US- Dorset = #2 in US- Hampshire = #3 in US4.
