(To Hell with Spain):- Mysterious explosion of US battleship Maine - Journals accuse Spain- Theodore Roosevelt was frustrated that McKinley wasn’t involved with Cuba Roosevelt organized his own regimen called “Rough Riders” Goes to Cuba to fight However, there were only light casualties Roosevelt tried to get Congress to nominate him for medal of honor- Spanish held control of Philippines (which was of great strategic value) 1890- Roosevelt orders Admiral Dewey to sail to Manila, Philippines, in case of war or Spanish attack- US declares war on Spain- Capture Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico- McKinley: God says it is his duty as a man of “educating, uplifting, and Christianizing”the people  1899, Philippine Insurrection:- Lead by Emilio Aguinaldo- America killed to “Educate, Uplift, and Christianize”- Philippines were angry at Americans 1901, Platt Amendment:- Cubans agree to US establishing protection and influence- US gains Guantanamo and maintains permanent naval base- Cuba non-entanglement- US passed the amendment to Cuban Constitution Philippines Lead to China:- 1899 & 1900, Open Door Notes US wants to be sure in all “Spheres of Influence” of Chinese territorial integrity (safeguard the country’s land), and opened free trade Granted multiple international powers with equal access to China, butnot total control US is worried about power struggle in northeast Building the Panama Canal:- 1901, Hay-Pauncefote Treaty: British backed out of any agreement made with US in building a canal US and UK signed this treaty as a preliminary to the creation of the Panama Canal The treaty nullified the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 and gave US right to create and control a canal across the Central American isthmus creating a quicker and less troublesome was from Atlantic to Pacific- 1903, Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty: Signed by US and Panama Established the Panama Canal Zone Named after its two primary negotiators, Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, the French diplomatic representative of Panama (who had construction rights) and US Secretary of State John Hay “I took Panama, while Congress debated it” :–Famous Theodore Roosevelt quote on construction of the Panama Canal- Theodore Roosevelt shoes authority again in Presidency- 1823, Monroe Doctrine Originally issued by President James Monroe Made Europeans unable to colonize US or Latin American countries 1904, Roosevelt Corollaryo Expands Monroe doctrine o If intervention in the affairs of a Latin America state was necessary, UShad the right to exercise military force in order to keep European countries out 1905, Russo-Japanese War:- Japanese had modern war tactics and Navy unlike Russians- Theodore Roosevelt doesn’t want Japan to have upper hand- Roosevelt plays peacemaker to prevent domination in Asia and negotiates a
