Evaluating the newborn - Get newborn dry and warm - Suction out mouth and nose- APGAR- score received by baby depending on health of baby. APGAR scale - score received by baby depending on health of baby- Taken 1 min after birth, and again 5 min after birth - Score goes from 0-10- Normal score: 1 min: 8, 5 min: 9- Score below 6: intervention and repetition after 10 min- Graphic 3. Birth complications- Sevier trauma: long term complications - Mild to moderate trauma: depends on environment - Babies re generally resilient 7. Reflexes: unlearned responses triggered by a specific stimulation f. Babinski: stroke bottom of foot- makes toes fan out g. Moro: lout noise that startles the baby- throws out arms then pulls them back in h. Rooting: cheek is stroked- baby will turn head in direction that cheek was stroked in.i. Palmer: put something in babies hand- baby will grasp it j. Other: blinking, stepping, sucking, 8. Newborn states of activity - Alert inactivity: calm, eyes open, inspecting environment - Waking activity: eyes open, seems unfocused, arms/legs move uncoordinated.- Crying- 2/3 hours a day - Sleeping- 16/18 hrs a day 9. Newborn sense of touch :- Spots of sensitivity: mouth, palms, soles of feet, genitals - Highly sensitive to pain11. Newborn sense of hearing - Can hear a lot - Prefers complex sounds- Learns sound patterns within days - Sensitivity to voice and biologically prepared to learn languages 12. Newborn sense of vision - Least developed sense because structures in eyes are not all the way formed yet- Limited activity - Scan environment, can track slowly moving
