Odyssey: - 20 year olds go to school and take breaks, love with parents or friends, fall in and out of love, try one career try another.- Parents get anxious, wonder if their kid is ever going to grow up - Delaying marriage, kids, permanent residence and job - People born before 1964 tend to define adulthood by: permanent residence and job, becoming economically independent, getting married, starting a family - In 1960 about 70%of 30 year olds had achieved these things, fewer than 40% of 30 year olds had done these things in the year 2000- We are now seeing the creation of a new life phase. Old success habits don’t apply: dating- social media Marriage- cohabitation Church attendance- spiritual longing Fluid job market Fluid social life- shift in balance of power between genders. Educated women can get what they want without being married 4. Physical development:- Physical changes - Health - Sexuality - Theories 5. Aging: a. Primary aging: - Universal and irreversible physical changes that occur to living creatures as they grow olderb. Secondary aging : - Specific physical illnesses or conditions that are most common in aging- but caused by health habits, gender, and other influences- environment, genetics 6. Stud of aging: a. Ageism : - Prejudice against aged - Works to prevent against elderly people from being as happy and productive as they could be b. Gerontology: - The study of old age c. Demography: - The study of populations including age, sex, income, and occupation d. Senescence: - State of physical decline- body becomes less strong or effective with age 7. Physical development in middle adulthood: - Senses and reaction time declines - Sexual activity: continues, less frequent, better - Climacteric: women- menopause, men- sperm count declines, lower testosterone- Double standard? (grey hair in men vs. women, older woman with younger man vs older man with younger woman) 9. Physical development in late adulthood : - Continued decline in senses and reaction time - Sexual activity continues - Overall development on activity throughout
