Development Study: a science which is dependent on theories, data, analysis, critical thinking, and sound methodology. Goal is to understand how and why diverse people change or remain the same over time. 2. Triangle of Development: These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Ecological and systematic approaches: process of reciprocal, patterns and interactions between developing person and physical/social/environmental effects. 4. Bronfenbrenner ecological model: Views person developing with a system of relationships which are effected by the surrounding environment. Five main parts: a. Microsystem: innermost level, consists of activities with personal and immediate surroundings. Example: family, work, religion, school, friends.b. Mesosystem: connecting factor between microsystem and individual system. NOT THE SAME AS MICROSYSTEM. Example: parent involvement in school.c. Exosystem: institutions of culture that indirectly effect developing person. Example: country wealth, funding for education.d. Macrosystem: Consists of cultural values. Example: laws, religion, customs.e. Chronosystem: life changes can be imposed externally or can arise from within person, since individuals shape many of their own settings and experiences.Bronfenbrenner ecological model visual:5. Characteristics of development: development is… lifelong, multidirectional, multicontextual, multicultural, multidisciplinary, and plasticity.6. Aspects of context: a. Cohort: Group of people born at or around the same time in the same place. Effected by similar social events.b. Culture: System of meanings/customs shared by the same people, including: values, attitude, goals, laws, beliefs, and morals.c. Social Clock: Set of age normality- what is expected to happen at certain ages.d. Normative history-graded influences: biological and environmental influences associated with historical moments in time.e. Normative age-grade influences: biological and environmental influences that are similar for individuals in an age group regardless of when/where they are raised.f. Normative sociocultural-graded influences: social/cultural factors presented at particular times for particular individuals depending on factors such as: race, gender, or religion.g. Non-normative life events: Specific atypical events that occur in a person’s life at a time when they do not happen to most people. Example: win the lottery, death of a child.7. Types of development: a. Physical development: physical growth/change. Social/cultural issues can affect physical development. Example: growth of brain, and need for food.b.
