and hundreds of prisons across the United States The use of prisons as punishment for serious criminal behavior is an America invention Distinguish between the Auburn and Pennsylvania systems of incarceration Two Systems of Penitentiary 1 Pennsylvania is known for the first place for a Segregate System which is where inmates were housed separately in individual cells ate in their cells exercised in separate yards and never interacted with other offenders 2 Auburn New York was known for the Congregate System which is where inmates were housed in separate cells but they ate worked and exercised in groups However they were in Isolation meaning a strict rule of silence that prohibited inmates from conversing with each other Distinguish between prisons and jails Prisons generally are state or federal facilities segregated according to the sex of the inmate which house persons convicted of felonies who are serving sentences of one year or more Jails are local municipal institutions and House a variety of people convicted of misdemeanors or at various stages of criminal case processing MORE JAILS THEN PRISONS Identify the Pains of Imprisonment 1 Deprivation of liberty 2 longer required to report to a parole officer nor subjected to supervision Unsupervised parole allowed an offender to serve a sentence until discharge without actually being restricted The next way is to apply for Executive Clemency which is mercy A convict could ask the governor for a commutation or pardon If they are given one then they are discharged from their sentence What are collateral consequences of conviction Identify five such consequences Collateral consequences are effects of a criminal conviction that are in addition to any criminal penalty Ex Loss of civil rights Examples of constitutional rights restored Processes change throughout out states from what the text says But one thing that I noticed that is a must in all states is that the parole or ex parole must meet certain conditions to apply or receive their constitutional rights back One of the main conditions that must be meet is that the parole learned to abide by the rules in the free world What are some of the problems in arriving at a definition of Recidivism Recidivism generally means returning to crime or other trouble Repetition with the criminal justice system It is hard to define because if a robber was released from custody but then goes commits a theft and is arrested did the offender repeat It is hard to be clear with what repetition includes What are some of the implications of the concept of recidivism for criminal justice policy One problem with recidivism is that it is very difficult to measure The Criminal Justice System has to be very careful in interpreting the sentencing
